Trump: Report on Increasing US Nuclear Arsenal 10-Fold Is ‘Fake News’

(CNS News) President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday that an NBC News reportthat he wanted to increase the United States nuclear arsenal 10 times was “fake news,” adding that the U.S. has “so many” nukes and he wanted them to be “in perfect shape.”

“That was fake news by NBC. Which is a lot of fake news lately,” the president said when asked whether he wanted to increase the nuclear arsenal.

Seated next to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the Oval Office, the president said, “I think somebody said I want 10 times the nuclear weapons that we have right now. Right now we have so many nuclear weapons. I want them to be completely in perfect shape.”

Trump said Secretary of State James Mattis would be releasing a statement “saying that was fake news.”

“And it is frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write and people should look into it,” Trump said.

“I want to have absolutely perfectly maintained– which we are in the processing of doing– nuclear force, but when they said I want 10 times what we have right now, it’s totally unnecessary, believe me. I know what we have right now,” he said.

The president said the U.S. doesn’t need an increase in nuclear weapons, but he wants “modernization” and “total rehabilitation” so it will be “in tip top shape…”
