‘They are both a disgrace to our Country…’
In yet another display of his preoccupation with the press, Trump tweeted on Sunday that a poll should be conducted regarding the Washington Post and the New York Times, two of the largest news organizations in the country.
“A poll should be done on which is the more dishonest and deceitful newspaper, the Failing New York Times or the Amazon (lobbyist) Washington Post! They are both a disgrace to our Country, the Enemy of the People, but I just can’t seem to figure out which is worse?”
Without indicating if anything specific had set off another tirade about the press, Trump said the papers would fold when he was no longer president.
“The good news is that at the end of 6 years, after America has been made GREAT again and I leave the beautiful White House (do you think the people would demand that I stay longer? KEEP AMERICA GREAT), both of these horrible papers will quickly go out of business & be forever gone!”
The Washington Post was founded in 1877.
It famously investigated Watergate and illegal activities orchestrated by the administration of Richard Nixon. Nixon resigned in 1974.
The Post was sold in 2013 to Amazon.com founder and chief executive Jeffrey Bezos.
The New York Times was founded in 1851.
It’s prize-winning reporting on national and international events includes its epic coverage of Cambodia by Sydney Schanberg and Dith Pran, which led to a Pulitzer Prize and the acclaimed film, “The Killing Fields.”
Trump has been highly critical of the press since his presidential campaign, leading him to coin the term “fake news” for stories he perceives as less than flattering, such as reporting on the Special Counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
He has called the U.S. press corps the “Enemy of the People.”
Reaction to Trump’s Sunday tweets included references to Father’s Day.
The president then tweeted: “Happy Father’s Day to all, including my worst and most vicious critics, of which there are fewer and fewer. This is a FANTASTIC time to be an American! KEEP AMERICA GREAT!”
