Trump Now Endorses Democrats’ Gun Control

“He has basically just gone over to the anti-gun, Barack Obama side of the gun debate,” Michael Hammond, legislative counsel at Gun Owners of America…

(Brendan Kirby, Lifezette) President Donald Trump endorsed a number of long-stalled gun control proposals on Wednesday, urging Congress to go big during a remarkable White House meeting with lawmakers from both parties.

Trump said he wants legislation that uses a bill sponsored by Sens. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) to extend background checks to private firearms sales as a starting point. He added that he wants to combine it with measures to address mental health problems and increase the number of people added to a nationwide database used in background checks for gun purchases. He also expressed openness to raising the legal age to purchase certain guns from 18 to 21.

“I think we’re going to have a vote,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a very successful vote, and I will sign it. And I will call whoever you want me to. I like what you’re doing, and I like what you’re doing already.”

Trump made clear he wants guns “immediately” taken out of the hands of dangerous people with mental illnesses. And he promised to use his executive power to ban bump stocks, which increase the speed at which semiautomatic guns can fire.

“You have to be very, very powerful on background checks. Don’t be shy. Very strong on mentally ill,” he said. “You have to be very, very strong on that. And don’t worry about bump stock. We’re getting rid of it. You don’t have to complicate the bill by adding another two paragraphs. We’re getting rid of it. I’ll do that myself.”

Trump added, “I’d rather you come down on the strong side than the weak side.”

The National Rifle Association (NRA), the nation’s largest advocacy organization for gun owners, did not immediately comment on Trump’s remarks. But other gun rights advocates wasted no time in unloading on the chief executive.

“He campaigned on supporting the Second Amendment,” said Michael Hammond, legislative counsel at Gun Owners of America. “He has basically just gone over to the anti-gun, Barack Obama side of the gun debate.”

Hammond expressed disappointment that Trump specifically opposed a proposal by House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) to include language in the bill that would require states to honor conceal-carry permits issued by other states. The president said including it could kill the bill.

Hammond said Trump’s response is odd since the reciprocity proposal has more support in Congress than the gun control measures under consideration.

** MORE GUN CONTROL COVERAGE at Liberty Headlines **

Hammond also questioned whether Wednesday’s confab at the White House was a replay of this month’s debate over immigration. Trump took his supporters by surprise by offering to grant amnesty to 1.8 million young adult illegal immigrants — a number far larger than are enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program created under Obama.

As he did Wednesday regarding guns, Trump told lawmakers during an immigration meeting that he would sign anything they passed. But legislation never passed because Trump followed up that meeting with insistence on concessions Democrats could not accept.

Second Amendment rights advocates wonder if the same will happen in coming days with gun control. Trump said he wants a package that would allow teachers to be trained to carry guns in schools. That has drawn fierce opposition from Democrats and some Republicans, including Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

But Trump won bipartisan praise from lawmakers who participated in the discussion. Manchin told Fox News afterward that he appreciates the president’s support for the bill he and Toomey have sponsored.

“I’m tickled to death, and with his support, both of us protecting the Second Amendment rights, we can move forward,” he said. “And that’s what we intend to do.”

Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) gave Trump a bracelet commemorating victims of the Valentine’s Day school shooting that occurred in his district.

“’Cause I want this to be the last one of these that we ever have to have,” he said.

Trump told lawmakers he made his views clear to NRA leaders over the weekend. “It’s time. We gotta stop this nonsense,” he said.

Trump suggested to Republican lawmakers that they should not fear blowback for softening opposition to gun restrictions.

“The background checks are so important. People are afraid to do background checks because you’re afraid of somebody. And you know what? You’re going to be more popular if you do background checks,” he said. “If you have a strong [position], good — I don’t care who’s endorsing you or not endorsing you, you’re going to be more popular.”

He added, “I’m not into popularly. I’m into getting something done if it’s good.”

Trump questioned why Congress had not acted after previous mass shootings.

“Why didn’t they do something about it?” he asked.

Trump was less committal on other ideas. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) asked about “weapons of war” like the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle. Trump said Feinstein would have to discuss that with her colleagues.

Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) urged Congress to pass a law removing restrictions on gun research sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“It’s a key piece. Having facts and scientific data is a key piece in helping us address this national public health issue,” she said.

Trump thanked Murphy for her comments but did not endorse the proposal.

We will see if Trump has the strength of his convictions and follows through. If he does may be he will be remembered as a great President.

    • Jimmy the Greek

      are you on crack ?

      • Mike

i admit given how terrible Trump is as President this seems unlikely but maybe he will surprise us all and do something worthwhile.

  • laulau

If you are mentally stable, then your guns won’t be taken, but isn’t it wise to take away the guns of someone who is unstable? These are the people that commit the crimes.

    • Maxine Albritton

we see this as a ploy, who is mentally unstable. some think Einstein was crazy and so was T. Edison. it si a matter of the eye of the beholder. I don’t know that this shooter was crazy but he did have some problems, sounds like his whole life was a problem. However that does not excuse what he did.

    • Jimmy the Greek

The government and there lackeys the police are the unstable ones there is were the disarming needs to start

  • Gy/Sgt. Lew Souder

I don’t like Trump anymore – he is a Turn-Coat siding with the democrats on Gun Control. He is no better than they are.. Forget 2020 – you blew it…..

    • Fed up!

He better be real careful, many are siding which you.

    • Maxine Albritton

If this turns out like I read, good post.

  • Fed up!

Hold on! Who determineds if one is mentally deranged. There a fine line, be careful. If I am anti government and have multiple guns, does that make me a danger and mentally unstable. You got to be careful, the second Amendment as far as I have read, doesn’t put a requirement as to ones thoughts or mentally. I have a Big problem when politicians tell Americans who and what should own guns. I had never found the need to own a gun till Obama occupied the Whitehouse.

    • Maxine Albritton

With all the terrorist about that Obama brought or let in guns are more important than ever. My parents never owned a gun. My husbands family owned them for hunting. Today they are more imperative. there are statues in place for all of this already. I don’t understand what is wrong with his thinking. The whole school story is a mass of negligence on the part of the FBI and the local sheriffs department. In fact, if all law departments work all over like they did we would not need them at all.for the good they did.

      • winkwink1

The law enforcement is only there to clean up the mess after fact. Not to prevent it. Protect yourself.

        • Velma Fowler

The law enforcement, is who needs to be checked on their Mental ability. It was not the lone shooter who was as much at fault as the law and school board. if they all were doing the job they were paid to do, it would not have happened, the law all had guns and did nothing, so the guns are not the problem, it is stupid people with high education ,that think they are so smart. As for protecting our children, it should not be that big of issue, they need to put bullet proof doors that once all the kids are in it closes and can not be opened from outside only going out, put surveillance cameras around the school and have it monitoring at all times, if someone needs in they need to show on the camera who they are and why they need in. Oh well who cares what I think

    • RealAmerican407

According to the left even an EMS worker who battled some PTSD years ago will now be categorically rejected from purchasing a firearm. The left’s “solutions” are absurd, tyrannical and extremely impractical to put it lightly.

      • chocopot

The Left’s goal is complete and total disarmament of the population. They are very happy to do it one small step at a time.

      • tCotUS

I believe that certain people should not have access to firearms at all, however we also recognize the dire importance of not infringing on the Constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. The DemonRATS/Soros type Globalists Don’t Care!! WE already have
enough LAWS but are ignored. We have an FBI that ignores credible intel on dangerous people, an ATF that is inefficient, & Police/Sheriff dept. that are unqualified.
“These are the real issues being ignored” …. AGAIN..

    • Doug

Last line -amusing comment- “I never found the need to own a gun till Obama occupied the Whitehouse” Sir don’t sell that gun.. Obama is still at work thinking that he is still President!!!

    • tCotUS

      Politicians handbook on Gun Control..
Anyone that does not agree with the Governement ……… has a mental problem
Anyone that owns more than one gun ………………………… has a mental problem
Anyone in the Military who fought for America.. …………….has a mental problem
Anyone who has more than 100 rounds of Ammunition…..has a mental problem
Anyone who has threatened the President ……………………Is OK ?
Anyone who voted for Hillary………………………………………..Is OK ?
**Sarcasm 101 to those on Gun Control***

    • oldwoman

      I hear ya!!

    • R. T.

That is my problem with this …
It sounds fine till you really think about it …
Do you have mental problems if you disagree with those in power ?

The gun grabbers took it right from Hitler ” Regulations Against Jews’ Possession of Weapons which effectively deprived all Jews living in those locations of the right to own a firearm or any other weapon. Historian William Sheridan Allen noted that the Nazis also went house to house confiscating firearms, targeting “ SUBVERSIVES ”.

So, knowing all of this, did Hitler ban guns? No, he did not. Some might even say that he made the gun control laws more lenient…for his allies. However, he did ban Jews from owning guns, or even holding them! After all, if you disarm your enemy, and arm your allies, who can rebel? Fortunately, others stood up to him; but who wants to take the chance, and hope someone else will defend them? ”

Hitler did this in 1938 and who determines SUBVERSIVE …

    • steven jacobs

I am pretty sure that , in many cases, it is not too difficult to kn ow. Either by behavior, many other people expressing concern, or being under a psychiatrist’s treatment. Remember-we are talking about impounding the guns until a solid determination can be made. If the subject is OK he/she/it/they get the guns back. Not a big deal. With almost a quarter of all Americans on some psychoactive medication that carries a BLACK BOX warning of-“can cause violence/homicidal ideation I would think a little prudence is called for.

    • winkwink1

I didn’t see an age limit either. Way back when the Constitution was written you got married around 14 and was a little more responsible.

  • Dan Baker

As much as I was for Trump my support is fading rapidly. Selling out to gun grabbers and their one world order ideas just hurt his standing with the people who love the Contitution of America

  • ray2hill

When are you right wing nut jobs going to realize that Trump is lost in his own foggy mind and has no idea whet he does or says?

    • GOP50

Guess you won’t own any guns as it is apparent you are mentally unstable. Move along troll as your Obama pjs are soiled again.

  • Jack Leonard

Trump was a shoe-in for re-election until now. If he favors amnesty for illegal aliens and gun control, he will lose. Guns are not the issue, government failure is. He is being duped by the democrats and the rino’s. Call the white house and let him know.

    • Doug

You Can’t Always Get What You Want You Can’t Always Get What You Want but you try sometimes you might find you get what you need…. sing it!!!!

      • whistlepigger

You might get what those in power think you need. I thought that was kind of a creepy song to play on the campaign trail.

        • Doug

          Lol

          • whistlepigger

It may not be a laughing matter.

          • Doug

Just thought your first comment was a bit amuzing… my comment was about the fact that we as conservatives and libreals are not going to get all that we want in this new presidency.. You have to give the President some credit for coming to the center on issues like gun control amd immigration… The gun control measure Im willing to support him which is something I wasn’t willing to do before… But more laws won’t really change anything I don’t believe…Bad behavior is not stoppable..

  • Vinnie S.

Now we have to wait for who makes the decisions as to who is and who is not mentally fit to purchase or own a gun. Will Maxine Waters have to give up her guns , or Nancy Pelosi since they both fit the profile of being mentally unstable,
and what about the criminals in the Democratic & Republican parties who are protected by bodyguards with Guns ? Will they be examined on an annual basis to make sure there are no loose screws, Oh and what about all the “Free Thinkers and Rabble Rousers” on “Social Media” that keep squawking about who should be shot or assassinated ?
I can visualize all the Psychiatrists counting the $$ they will be making examining all the contestants for these tests, or how about a reality show like “America’s got Talent” ? We could call it “America’s got Wackos” or ” Who’s the most Mentally Disturbed” ? Here’s another Question that I would like answered, “Which of the Lawmakers” might be eligible for a Reality check by a Shrink ?
Antifa Members ? BLM supporters ? Illegal Aliens ? Drug Dealers ? Be wary about what you wish for, you just might get it. It all comes down to , Who pays for all this ? Yup , You guessed it, The American Taxpayer , YOU !

too late. Trump has become the almost perfect little polititian

  • Jacks are Wild

Trump, being I am a senior I don’t expect to live for ever but, I do believe that you need to live up to what you had promised. You have failed, with a lot of help from the RINOs & Demos on the major issues. Freedom of speech Immigation control has been lost but If you do not save the 2nd amendment the USA is lost. I can assure you that there isn’t enough people in this country to take the guns away from those you have them.

  • bonavajo

The “universal” background check is not needed or practical as not one mass shooting was the result of a legal gun owner transferring a gun to a mass shooter. If Trump thinks this will stop the shootings he or his advisors do not have the facts. All have been by legally purchased guns by the shooter who underwent a government background check or using stolen guns. Only 2 thing swill stop it 1) having one way in and one way out of the school with a central checkpoint 2) having all states establish a system like FL has that allows people to be held for up to 72 hrs before going before a judge because they are deemed a threat to others or themselves; it’s called the “BAKER ACT” in Fl. Call me POTUS I will be glad to flesh out my detailed plan for a solid school security system.

    • D L

Having one way in/out at a central checkpoint creates a chokepoint which BENEFITS anyone who wishes to do harm to students… You have a large mass of students in one location where no one has been verified to be gun free or bomb free. It’s heaven for a shooter or a suicide bomber. A student with a gallon of gasoline in a backpack in a chokepoint could destroy more students than this Florida shooter. Then what will you do? Ban gasoline? Smaller schools where the staff knows all the students by site, who knows which students might be troubled enough to cause harm to themselves or others is the sane solution to these mass assaults by troubled individuals. Stop punishing all people for the actions of a few deranged people. It’s tragic the people have died but unless you are going to prohibit all gasoline sales, prohibit all alcohol sales, prohibit all knife ownership, prohibit all car sales you are ignoring the more common causes of human tragedy. It’s NOT THE TOOL that is the problem, it is the individual.

  • Constance Brummer

Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. I have never seen a gun load it self or fire by it self.

  • RealAmerican407

No border wall, Obamacare continues to crush families and now gun control.

Trump just Tossed 2020 Out The Window. “turncoat” describes him like the gentleman below commented

  • Russell walls

    Two Face!

Trump has lost his back bone. He said he would support our second Amendment. Why are the lawful people being judged by the few. It’s not the instrument that’s killing people. Trump isn’t standing up for our second Amendment and caving in to the left. What the next thing Trump promise to do to screw the people? The problem here is the swamp and the left and Trump is caving to them at our expense. Politicians make up and pass laws that we the people have to abide and follow, but they don’t. Guess were going back to the left controls everything and we the people get screwed. At least before we knew we were getting lied to. Thanks Mr Trump for wasting my vote. I don’t trust someone who can’t stand up for what the say, Your a two face ____. You are selling out all the people who trusted and believed in you. Thanks for a line of BULL. We always could tell when Obama was lying, his lips were moving. But we are learning that anything you say you stand up for is a lye. Trump is selling us out for the crying left.

  • regulus30

69 complaints to the Broward police dept; could do the job; ‘fed up’;; I see your concerns obimbo was having his “obimbocare” doctors asking if the patient owned a weapon; this is a slippery slope just like the “no fly no buy” bill.

  • Just1Saddletramp

To all here who claim to formerly be Trump supporters and now are changing their mind I say ” Beware the Trojan horse”. News media are legendary for fake news. Technology has enabled the media to alter everything we read or see. What appears to be real may not be. Bottom line: TRUST NO ONE but keep the pressure on to preserve Constitutional rights and be prepared to fight and possibly die for them

  • jlcham

I think I’ll wait and see. Something tells me Trump has something big up his sleeve and this is just negotiations for “The Art of The Deal”.

    • tCotUS

You could be right .. But,trusting a politician, like saying the old rifle will never rust in the rain. .

      • jlcham

That’s just it. He is not a “politician”.

        • Kbuzz

          you beat me to it.

          • tCotUS

            Lets hope so.

    • Jacks are Wild

I retired from the oilfield & negotiated big deals as well. “The Art of The Deal” is a figment of trump’s imagination. His method of negotiation is asking what he has to give them to get what little they give him. His negotiations are typically 90% for them & 10% for him. We all end up on the short end the stick.

  • William L. Ramsburg

IT’S CALLED TREASON AGAINST THE CITIZEN GOVERNMENT OF OUR NATION!! TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION

  • Fbudzy

Is Liberty Headlines following in the steps of the fake news media? Sounds like it to me. This President has use this tactic before, it is nothing more than getting a conversation started. But of course these experts spew whatever comes into their heads and you guys jump on it, like it’s gospel. We need to take a deep breath and let this play out. There needs to be rules set because, we as a nation have let the mental health issue go unchecked not for years but for decades. So this is his way of getting people talking and it is long overdue.

  • James G. Mothes

I supported and voted for Trump, mainly because he claimed to be a 2nd Amendment supporter. I am a Benefactor member of the NRA, Life Member of The Citizens Committee to keep and Bear Arms, 2nd Amendment Foundation member, NRA Whittington Center Founders Club member. I do not think we need bump stocks. I was amazed that the BATF approved them. However, if you are old enough to die for your country with a gun in your hand, you are damn sure old enough to own one!! I do not believe in waiting limits on gun purchases, and how are you going to create stiffer background checks without them? If you lie on the check you are committing a crime, but does the BATF enforce that law? If Trump crawdads on these matters he is really going to crap in his nest!!!

    • bob laford

I agree but don’t throw out the baby with the bath water!

  • bob laford

Too early to judge the outcome and I would not change my vote to a demoncrap ever, nor would I give up my second amendment rights! I have no problem with back ground checks but do resent the stock piling of information. It is a data base for future gun confiscations.

  • Unforgotten27

I agree, “Who Determines”? I understand recent events have caused some changes; but this is a very slippery slope! I sincerely hope everyone keeps an eye open on your politicians, especially the Liberals & after being a stanch supporter of Trump, I think he needs to be EXTREMELY careful……

  • dave_570m

If trump screws with the 2nd Admin. It’s a sure fire way to lose the next election. I for one will NOT vote for him if he does

  • Bill Harrison

Background checks and longer wait times for gun purchases will not infringe of anyone 2nd Amendment rights. Mental health is a hard subject. Most people with a mental illness never get violent. So how do you get on list? How do you get off? What are your rights to appeal being put on a list? Who decides who get on list? Many question about mental health need to be answered. The main point is illegal and legal drugs are the cause of these shooting, not guns. SCHOOL SECURITY IS THE ANSWER. a LITTLE COMMON sense will go a long way. Same goes for immigration.

  • Dan Baker

Trump is walking down the wrong road with this move , may cost him a reelection bid

  • David

Just because Trump is a BETTER PRESIDENT than ‘King Obama’ was DOESN’T entitle him to UNCONSTITUTIONAL MEANS/ACTIONS!!! He’s endangering his Presidency/re-election.

  • Jimi Helms

If the Democrats succeed and pass a law to take our guns, as a nation of law abiding people are we going to follow the law and give up our guns or are we going to follow the Constitution and fight them? Out of my cold dead hand.

  • Dr. Mike Reeder

We already have background checks and waiting periods in many states. Let’s see if these work? My sense tell me they do not. If Mr. Trump does indeed make good on his treats I will NOT vote for him again. If he betrays the Second Amendment why would ANYONE vote for him? He has taken a sacred vow to uphold against the Constitution of the United States against enemies both foreign AND domestic. This action will for him out of office! And it should!

  • G.Mann

Second Article of Bill of Rights is not about guns. It is about the individual
right to self defense by any necessary means. The Bill of Rights are
not “amendments”. It was added to the Original Draft of the Constitution
because none of the 13 original states would accept the Constitution
without those Rights being specifically listed as coming NOT from
government, but from God, as part of your birthright as a human.

Those 10 Articles are what makes America unique in all countries in the history of the world.

Next time someone demands you surrender your right to self defense, ask them
if they will surrender theirs. DO NOT allow the dialogue to be dictated
to you that “it’s about guns”.

    You decide.

IF the lunatics have guns taken out of their hands does that include the many many FBI/CIA false flag events where they shoot people and then blame a patsy? I do not believe that he president has gone over to the Democrats regarding gun control. He has always defended our 2nd amendment . He was just throwing out ideas like everybody else on the table were Republicans and Democrats were discussing gun control. He is concerned only about the mentally unstable using guns and taking guns away from them. Us Americans, that know how to use guns with a great deal of common sense should keep them for our own safety. He certainly did not have any help from the Democrats, especially Dianne Feinstein who was not even nominated from her own state California.

PRES TRUMP… YOU HAVE JUST STEPPED OFF THE SIDEWALK OF LOYALTY TO WE THE PEOPLE…

WE THE PEOPLE MUST BE ALLOWED TO VOTE ON ANY AND ALL CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES… We The People Will Accept Only Paper Ballots…

ALL STATES MUST BE ALLOWED TO RATIFY OR DECLINE SAID CHANGES…

THE SUPREME COURT MUST DELIVER A VERDICT OF WHETHER SAID CHANGES ARE CONSTITUTIONAL OR UNCONSTITUTIONAL…

There’s always a way around things like this, in this case, the so called mentally unfit who own guns should ” sell ” or ” give ” them to a friend or relative, who lives in the same house, or nearby, and can ” borrow ” them when required, just hope they don’t need to use them, which will of course get the ” owner ” in trouble.

  • Paul Brown

The big problem is the demonrats feel anyone who has a gun or owns a gun or fought for America or if you are a patriot and want to save this country, then you are a mental case and should not have a weapon. If you are a republican you are a danger to this country and shouldn’t own a weapon. To these communist pigs you are a racist if you just say thank you to a vet or you mention the word of patriot. Well if being a patriot or loving and wanting to protect or fight for my country makes me a racist, then YES, I am one and I am proud of it to.

Now we see the REAL Donald Trump! He is New World Order and this proves it!
