‘The Fake News Media is doing everything possible to stir up and anger the pols …’
(Larry McShane, New York Daily News) President Donald Trump’s continued attacks on the Mueller report and the media Saturday mixed in with another declaration of his innocence.
Trump, for a second straight morning, fired up his Twitter feed to lash out at special counsel Robert Mueller and his 22-month investigation into possible Russian collusion during the 2016 presidential campaign.
“Despite the fact that the Mueller Report should not have been authorized in the first place & was written as nastily as possible by 13 (18) Angry Democrats who were true Trump Haters, including highly conflicted Bob Mueller himself, the end result is No Collusion, No Obstruction!” read one of his run-on remarks.
The online rants were at odds with the initially upbeat White House response to Thursday’s release of the redacted 448-page report. Trump declared “total exoneration” while top aide Kellyanne Conway called it “the best day” for the administration since the January 2017 inauguration.
Trump’s tweeting began before the president arrived for a Saturday morning round of golf at his Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Fla., during an Easter weekend stay at his Mar-a-Lago estate. After getting in his shot at Mueller, Trump teed off on the media.
“The Fake News Media is doing everything possible to stir up and anger the pols and as many people as possible seldom mentioning the fact that the Mueller Report had as its principle conclusion the fact that there was NO COLLUSION WITH RUSSIA,” he tweeted. “The Russia Hoax is dead!”
Trump’s latest remarks came one day after the House Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena seeking a copy of Mueller’s unredacted report, along with all of the underlying evidence collected during the lengthy investigation.
The Justice Department is pushing back, with House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler and other Democrats suggesting Attorney General William Barr was protecting Trump. Barr is slated to appear on May 1 before a Senate committee and May 2 before Nadler’s congressional committee.
On Friday, Trump took aim at former and current White House aides who cooperated with the investigation. Some of their statements, he declared, were “fabricated and totally untrue … total bulls—t & only given to make the other person look good (or me look bad).”
Trump did take some time from his insults and grousing to declare that while Mueller was still bad, his report was very good for the White House.
“The end result of the greatest Witch Hunt in U.S. political history is No Collusion with Russia (and No Obstruction),” he tweeted. “Pretty Amazing!”
The president followed up four hours by posting a video titled “Mueller Investigation by the Numbers—$30-plus million spent, 28 Angry Democrats, 675 Days, 2,800-plus subpoenas, 500-plus witnesses, 0 collusion, 0 obstruction.”
The 18-second clip ends with Trump smiling and raising a glass in victory.
