‘Outwork the hate. Outwork these kind of un-American policies that say that we don’t count…’
“Sen. [Gary] Peters, D-Michigan, is right, [Trump] doesn’t want us counted. In 2010, there were over 540 area Census offices. In 2020, they are only going to give us 248,” Tlaib said according to the Detroit News. “I know about our city. When people say we can not do it, we show them we can. Out work the hate. Out work these kind of un-American policies that say that we don’t count.”
Tlaib mislead the public by implying that the Trump administration targeted Detroit for fewer census offices.
Jeff Behler, the Census Bureau’s regional director for the New England states, discussed on NPR the decision to reduce the number of census offices throughout the country, not in Detroit alone.
“Behler points out the Census Bureau is boosting the number of outreach workers compared to the last headcount,” NPR reported. “But he says the streamlining of offices for 2020 is in large part because next year’s census will be available online. For the first time, all households can submit their information through a website…”
The change also reflects Detroit’s massive decline in population since the Great Recession.
The Census Bureau will enroll 2,000 workers to encourage and assist Detroit residents in filling out the census.
Tlaib spoke at a rally to encourage participation in the 2020 census, which determines how much federal funding the city will receive over the next decade.
City officials said Detroit will lose $1,800 in federal funding each year for every resident who does not complete the census.
Democratic politicians in Detroit also feared that the census citizenship question would discourage participation among illegal aliens.
President Donald Trump responded to this position in a tweet.
“Can you believe that the Radical Left Democrats want to do our new and very important Census Report without the all important Citizenship Question,” Trump tweeted. “Report would be meaningless and a waste of the $Billions (ridiculous) that it costs to put together!”
