(Kaylee McGhee, Liberty Headlines) Despite having recently joined a Democrat-driven rebuke of President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration, Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said that by denying the ongoing crisis at the border, leftists are only helping the GOP.

Romney said Trump “tapped into something which the people feel very deeply” during the 2016 election, and that refusing to acknowledge the immigration crisis is a “huge error” on the part of the Democrats.

“We can’t have millions upon millions of people flooding into our country without a border that’s secure, without ICE making sure the people that are here illegally are sent back,” Romney told NBC News.

“This is a winning issue I think for Republicans. But more importantly, it’s a winning issue for Americans to say, ‘We have to have the sovereignty of our nation.’”

However, Romney added that Republicans have a “responsibility” to DACA recipients, or immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children. Though he disagreed with the Obama-era policy, Romney said the government must “fulfill what is a presidential pledge and commitment.”

Romney agreed that the current immigration process is unable to handle the massive influx of immigrants the southern border has seen over the last few months.

“There’s been a dramatic shift [in immigration],” Romney said. “We’re seeing unaccompanied young people, as well families with lots of kids, pouring into the border, and they say the magic word: ‘I’m seeking asylum.’”

This process, which left-wing immigration activists and open-borders advocates have coached the illegal border-crossers to follow, exploits a series of major loopholes in asylum laws, Romney said.

Moreover, he said the left’s use of these so-called refugees as political pawns ultimately did harm to the immigrants themselves.

“By virtue of our laws and processes here, we bring them into the country, and we don’t begin to have enough space in our facilities to provide the care these people deserve,” Romney said, “so they’re being turned into our country—125,000 of them this year. It’s overwhelming our system.”

Romney called on Democrats to work with the GOP under presidential leadership to find a legislative solution.

“The Democrats are making a huge error by making border security an issue and saying that it’s a partisan issue. This is an American issue,” Romney said.
