Recap of Trump’s 2017 Pro-Life Goals, Accomplishments

Smooth Sailing? Liberals' Opposition to Gorsuch Weak

(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) Before the American people elected Donald Trump, he sent a letter to pro-life Americans promising four goals.

First, that he would nominate a pro-life Supreme Court Justice.

Second, that he would sign the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

Third, that he would defund Planned Parenthood.

Fourth, that he would make the Hyde Amendment permanent.

Trump also reminded Americans what his opponent, Hillary Clinton, proposed for unborn children.

Clinton wanted to appoint radically pro-choice justices, who would affirm that “the unborn person doesn’t have constitutional rights.”

Second, she opposed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, and even supported abortions up until the moment of birth.

Third, she wanted to increase funding for Planned Parenthood’s abortion mill.

Last, Clinton hoped to repeal the Hyde Amendment and force pro-life Americans to pay for abortions.

Susan B. Anthony List encouraged Trump to make his pro-life commitments a centerpiece of his campaign and presidency.

A year into his first presidential term, SBA released an update on Trump’s pro-life accomplishments.

Trump achieved his first goal of appointing a pro-life Supreme Court Judge in less than two weeks.

In showing his opposition to abortion, Gorsuch said it “involves the death of a person…” He said he believes all life should be protected, calling it “intrinsically valuable,” according to U.S. News.

While the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act has not become law, it did pass the House of Representatives in October.

The bill failed in 2013 and 2015 in the House, but Trump’s support from the White House helped it to pass this time.

The Senate has not brought the bill to the floor for a vote yet, but if that chamber passes it, then Trump has promised to sign it.

Trump’s support for the 20-week abortion ban upset the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

They called the abortion ban “unconstitutional” and an attempt to “challenge the 1973 Supreme Court decision protecting a woman’s right to safe and legal abortion.”

Congress hasn’t passed legislation to defund Planned Parenthood, either, but Trump signed a bill making it easier for states to block funding to facilities that provide abortions, NPR reported.

Trump has made major pro-life victories outside of U.S. borders, too.

He reinstated and expanded the Mexico City policy, which prohibits foreign health spending from funding abortions, The Washington Examiner reported.

Obamacare created major pro-abortion mandates.

Even without a full repeal from Congress, Trump has still provided some relief.

He gave protections to religious and moral objectors of the Obamacare mandate to provide abortifacient drugs, The Weekly Standard reported.

The SBA List says there’s still a lot of work Trump can do to help unborn children in 2018.

Atop its list of priorities are defunding Planned Parenthood at the federal level; passing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act through the Senate; and repealing pro-abortion Obamacare.

He also has to fill 135 vacancies in lower courts and prepare to select another pro-life Supreme Court Justice in case of a vacancy.
