‘There you have it folks – the witch hunt continues…’
(Liberty Headlines) Following Speaker Nancy Pelosi‘s announcement Tuesday afternoon that the House will open an “official impeachment inquiry” (even though such an action can only be initiated by a vote of the full chamber) against President Donald Trump, Republicans in both the House and Senate issued impassioned responses. Following are a sampling:
House Republican Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana — “The power of impeachment was not designed to be a check on the electorate. But after two years of investigations failed to undo the 2016 election, Speaker Pelosi now calls for impeachment of the President of the United States, despite the fact that there are no ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ she can cite. It’s pathetic and disgraceful that after the Mueller report showed there was no collusion, Speaker Pelosi continues to advance this impeachment witch hunt, now relying on unconfirmed, secondhand accusations.”
Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama — “The Constitution states a president can only be impeached for ‘Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.’ Hatred, dislike or a desire for Socialism & Open Borders do not support gutting the people’s will and overturning properly held elections. Socialist Democrats have yet to produce ANY credible evidence of President Trump’s violation of a SINGLE, SPECIFIC federal criminal statute that constitutes ‘Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.’”
Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona — “Speaker Pelosi appeared to capitulate to her radical base today by launching an impeachment inquiry, but her statement was nothing short of a sham and a fraud. If she is intent on launching impeachment proceedings, then she should immediately put an impeachment resolution on the House floor for the tell-all vote. Speaker Pelosi’s failure to do so is a continuation of the hoax that Democrats have perpetrated on the American people for the past three years. She is trying to have this both ways.
“This has always been a binary choice for Democrats: impeach President Trump or damage his credibility and perception enough to harm his future electoral chances. There was never a willingness to work with this President for the best of the country. Speaker Pelosi acts as if she is on the side of impeachment, her hand having been forced by the socialist wing of her party.”
Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee — “Today the Speaker of the House issued a false and feeble decree. Today isn’t what impeachment looks like, and this afternoon’s press conference changes nothing legally. There has been no House vote to authorize a formal impeachment inquiry. If Democrats believed the facts were in their favor, they would provide the due process that the House provided under the Clinton and Nixon impeachments. No matter how many Democrats subscribe to the fantasy that the House began an impeachment inquiry—whether in March, July, August or September—neither Chairman Nadler nor Speaker Pelosi have unilateral authority to launch one.
“This is the first partisan ‘impeachment’ in the history of the republic, and the real victims are the American people. They elected Donald Trump to be our president and their representatives to solve the border crisis and support a growing economy. Instead of accepting those facts, Democrats are sowing chaos, not producing legislative solutions.”
Rep. Ron Estes of Kansas — “Even before seeing a transcript, Speaker Pelosi has decided to surrender to the most radical voices in her party by moving forward with an impeachment inquiry over reports of a phone call between President Trump and the leader of Ukraine. While the president has vowed to release a full transcript, which I look forward to reviewing, I believe starting an impeachment inquiry today is irresponsible and will only succeed in further dividing the American people.’
Rep. Steven Palazzo of Mississippi — “This is undoubtedly the lowest political attack I’ve witnessed since coming to Congress. Pelosi and her cronies have been waiting for this day since the moment President Trump was sworn into office. I fully believe President Trump has nothing to hide and that this investigation is a continuation of the liberal witch hunt against him. This is a sad day for our country.”
Rep. Ted Budd of North Carolina — “President Trump is right to release the full, unredacted transcript of his call with the Ukrainian President. That’s the first-hand account of the call. It’s incredibly reckless for House Democrats to base an impeachment inquiry on the second-hand account of a whistleblower whose attorney worked for Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton.”
Rep. Mark Walker of North Carolina — “House Democrats have been tilting at windmills in search of impeachment for the last three years and they now think they have found their Don Quixote in a leaker who is pushing secondhand rumors. After saying it ‘divides the country,’ Speaker Pelosi now says impeachment is a ‘healing process’ and is taking an action supported by barely one-third of American voters.
“Efforts to remove the elected President of the United States with no evidence of wrongdoing would leave the country even more divided and polarized than it is now. The Speaker knows this, but thinks appeasing the most radical liberals in her caucus is more important than the stability and prosperity of our nation. Her party is acting in Russia’s interest to further divide us.
“Congressman Al Green was honest on what this is about, ‘I’m concerned that if we don’t impeach this President, he will get re-elected.’”
Rep. Bill Johnson of Ohio — “Here we go again! The Mueller probe, investigating a fake Russian collusion conspiracy theory, flopped for Democrats. Now, with no evidence, and no firsthand information, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats decided today to launch a formal inquiry of impeachment into President Donald Trump. This is another dead end – just picking up the carcass of the dead Russian Collusion hoax – led by those who are now infamous for spouting blatant untruths and promising incriminating evidence that never comes.”
Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio — “Democrats have been trying to impeach the President since the beginning of this Congress. Michael Cohen’s testimony was a bust. John Dean’s testimony was a waste of time. The Mueller report did not live up to the hype. Speaker Pelosi’s decision to pursue impeachment now – on the basis of unsubstantiated, indirect, and anonymous allegations – only shows that the Speaker has finally succumbed to unrelenting pressure from the socialist wing of the Democrat Party. This was never about Russian collusion or Ukrainian prosecutions. It is all about undoing the 2016 election and the will of the American people.”
Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina — “There you have it folks – the witch hunt continues. The House Democrats are proceeding on impeachment against President Trump without any evidence of wrongdoing and against the will of the American people…
“I’m glad that President Trump is releasing the unredacted transcript of his conversation with the President of Ukraine tomorrow so the American people can see exactly what was said. But the fact remains: it’s chilling to see an entire political party unify and back impeachment before the facts are revealed. That’s truly telling – they hate this President so much.
“The left and some extremely biased members of the mainstream media have perpetuated the Russian collusion hoax and now Ukraine in an incredibly irresponsible way. Report first – accuse first – fact-find later. Remember folks, in the words of Rep. Al Green, “I’m concerned that if we don’t impeach this President, he will get re-elected.” That’s what this is all about.”
Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming — “Speaker Pelosi is walking away from even the pretense of the necessity of evidence. She has announced a formal impeachment inquiry of the President of the United States based on news reports of a phone call and a whistleblower. The Speaker and House Democrats have lost all credibility and, most tragically, have abdicated their duty to the Constitution and to the American people.”
Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas — “Despite an unprecedented act of transparency by the president in releasing the transcript of his call with a foreign leader, the Democrats nevertheless plunged headlong into their nonstop obsession with impeachment. I only wish they’d get the facts before jumping to a conclusion, while dedicating a fraction of the energy to improving the lives of Arkansans.”
Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa — “Unfortunately, instead of waiting to learn the facts by reviewing that transcript or hearing from the whistleblower, Democrats have moved straight to starting the impeachment process. Democrats have been searching for any reason to impeach President Trump since his inauguration because they couldn’t accept the results of the 2016 election.
“This all reeks of hypocrisy considering former Vice President Joe Biden has already said he used his office and taxpayer dollars to pressure Ukraine’s president into taking specific law enforcement actions that directly benefited his son. The attention on unverified reports instead of an on-record admission shows why Americans are so distrustful of politicians and the media.”
Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma — “Democrats have been conducting an impeachment investigation for months, and they’ve been investigating President Trump since he took office. Today’s announcement by Speaker Pelosi, while an escalation of Democrat smear tactics, is nothing new. It just proves, yet again, that they are desperate and singularly focused on discrediting and delegitimizing President Trump, no matter what, in spite of his successes with the economy, military and judges.”
Dan Conston, President of the Congressional Leadership Fund Super PAC — “Rather than moving forward with any meaningful legislation to help resolve the many issues our nation faces, Pelosi and the Democrats are intent on doing everything they can to subvert the results of the 2016 election. Democrats feeling euphoric in the moment, will awaken to a nightmarish hangover when they’re forced to defend their decision to their constituents back home. With the House Majority running through many districts President Trump won handily, this move will have dire consequences for their chances of retaining a Majority in 2020.”
Adam Brandon, President of free-market grassroots group FreedomWorks — “From day one, far-left members of the House Democratic Caucus have called for the impeachment of President Trump. Every single accusation made against him has proven to be false, but this disgraceful political witch hunt has continued because House Democrats still can’t get over the results of the 2016 presidential election. Unhappiness about an election or policy disagreements is not a cause for impeachment. With nearly 60 percent of Americans opposing impeachment, House Democrats are taking a step that will only further divide the nation.”
