(Kaylee McGhee, Liberty Headlines) President Donald Trump blamed former House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., for reneging on his vow to rally the GOP-led Congress behind a border wall, adding that Ryan assured him Republicans would secure wall funding if Trump agreed not to veto the omnibus spending bill last year.

“Well, I was going to veto the omnibus bill and Paul told me in the strongest of language, ‘Please don’t do that, we’ll get you the wall.’ And I said, ‘I hope you mean that, because I don’t like this bill,’ ” Trump told The Daily Caller in an interview Wednesday.

“Paul told me in the strongest of terms that, ‘Please sign this and if you sign this we will get you that wall,’” Trump continued. “Which is desperately needed by our country. Humanitarian crisis, trafficking, drugs, you know, everything — people, criminals, gangs, so, you know, we need the wall.”

But instead of following through and demonstrating leadership, Ryan “went lame duck,” Trump said, referring to the former speaker’s decision to retire instead of running for re-election in 2018.

“And once he went lame duck, it was just really an exercise in waving to people, and the power was gone so I was very disappointed. I was very disappointed in Paul because the wall was so desperately needed. And I’ll get the wall,” Trump said.

A 17-person, bipartisan congressional committee is set to meet this week to negotiate a deal on funding for the wall.

But Trump has expressed little faith in the group, since most of the Democrats are blatantly opposed to increasing border security and many Republicans on the committee would rather avoid another government shutdown.

Trump has threatened to use his executive power to unilaterally fund the wall by using money from the national defense fund.

“Republicans on the Homeland Security Committee are wasting their time,” Trump tweeted. “Democrats, despite all of the evidence, proof and Caravans coming, are not going to give money to build the DESPERATELY needed WALL. I’ve got you covered. Wall is already being built, I don’t expect much help!”
