FLAKE: ‘President Trump should heed the warnings of the Justice Department and FBI…’
(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) After reports that President Donald Trump will release a classified memo, Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake, R-Arizona, released statements opposing the president, saying the decision is anti-American and pro-Putin.
The four-page memo contains information that shows the FBI used a secret surveillance program, under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), to spy on the Trump campaign.
The FBI used information from a speculative dossier, compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele, to get a surveillance warrant for Carter Page, a foreign policy advisor on the Trump campaign.
The FBI would not have received a warrant without the unsubstantiated information contained in the Steele dossier.
Rep. Devin Nunes, R-California, is the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, where the memo originated.
“It’s clear that top officials used unverified information in a court document to fuel a counter-intelligence investigation during an American political campaign,” Nunes said, according to Time.
This is the information that Flake and McCain didn’t want the American public to see.
“In 2016, the Russian government engaged in an elaborate plot to interfere in an American election and undermine our democracy,” McCain said in a press release. “And while we have no evidence that these efforts affected the outcome of our election, I fear they succeeded in fueling political discord and dividing us from one another.”
Democrats like Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, have argued that the alleged Trump-Putin collusion poses a greater threat to the United States than the FBI’s confirmed assault on Trump in the 2016 election.
McCain made the same claim.
“The latest attacks on the FBI and Department of Justice serve no American interests – no party’s, no president’s, only Putin’s,” McCain said. “The American people deserve to know all of the facts surrounding Russia’s ongoing efforts to subvert our democracy, which is why Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation must proceed unimpeded.”
Flake, another anti-Trump Republican, didn’t want the memo released either.
“President Trump should heed the warnings of the Justice Department and FBI, and reverse his reported decision to defy long-standing policies regarding the disclosure of classified information,” Flake said in a statement. “The president’s apparent willingness to release this memo risks undermining U.S. intelligence-gathering efforts, politicizing Congress’ oversight role, and eroding confidence in our institutions of government.”
