(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, sent a letter to Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., requesting that he disclose secret agreements he made to investigate and undermine President Donald Trump.

“You have sought to avoid public scrutiny of your quest to obtain the President’s financial information,” Jordan wrote. “…you broke your promise to hold a public business meeting to debate a subpoena to Mazars.”

Cummings, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, enacted a secret Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., the chair of the House Financial Services Committee.

MOUs are used to coordinate action between committees, but they are normally made public and voted on by the full committee.

Cummings and Waters privately agreed to subpoena two financial institutions to obtain Trump’s tax documents.

Waters sent a subpoena to Capital One and Cummings sent one to Mazars.

Cummings has taken additional steps to ensure compliance with some subpoenas by threatening to withhold pay from government employees who refuse them.

Jordan noted that House committees can only investigate matters that relate to legislation.

“Your MOU cites no federal statute, bill, amendment or other legislative proposal for which the information is desired,” Jordan wrote. “In fact, the word ‘legislative’ does not appear at all anywhere in your MOU, while the words ‘investigate,’ ‘investigative,’ and ‘investigation’ appear several times.”

Moreover, the subpoenas that Cummings and Waters sent requested information about Trump’s finances from before he became president.

Jordan accused Cummings of seeking Trump’s private financial information “for the illegitimate purpose of public disclosure in pursuit of headlines.”

“In the interest of promoting the utmost transparency about the Committee’s business, I encourage you to release publicly your MOU with Chairwoman Waters and any other signed or unsigned MOUs that you have entered into so that the American people can understand the extent to which you and other Democrat chairpersons are engaged in an orchestrated effort to attack the President for political gain,” Jordan wrote.
