‘The president has been calling the press the enemy of the people, and I can tell you we’re not going to let this go…’
(Michael Barnes, Liberty Headlines) MSNBC’s power hot-couple of Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are no fans of President Donald Trump, and on Thursday evening the “Morning Joe” hosts aired out their latest grievances on “The Late Show with Steven Colbert.”
“Pathetic,” is how Brzezinski described Trump’s response to the recent alleged murder of Washington Postwriter Jamal Khashoggi.
Scarborough, who was once a GOP congressman from Florida, called it an “embarrassment.”
Khashoggi is believed to have been murdered and dismembered by Saudi operatives at a Saudi embassy in Turkey.
“These people took a Washington Post columnist, a Virginia resident who has two American children, and sawed him up while he was alive for criticizing a Saudi leader in the Washington Post,” Scarborough said.
While Trump says he’s waiting for more answers and is contemplating a response, he reminded reporters on Wednesday that Khashoggi wasn’t even an American citizen.
“Well, he wasn’t a citizen of this country, for one thing,” Trump told an irate White House press corps.
While gruesome, Khashoggi was indeed a Saudi national who may well have been killed by Saudis on Saudi sovereign territory inside the foreign Islamic country of Turkey.
Critics allege that the media’s intense pressuring of the administration to retaliate against Saudi Arabia — at the risk of huge economic and strategic loss to the United States — only highlights the media’s self-absorption.
“The president has been calling the press the enemy of the people, and I can tell you we’re not going to let this go,” said Brzezinski.
“We’re not going to let this go, the Washington Post is not going to let this go and the New York Times is not going to let this go,” she added, adamantly.
But recent reporting shows that Khashoggi was far from the democracy advocate and honest journalist that the media now portrays him to be.
According to Middle East scholars Tony Badran and Michael Doran, he was an ardent Islamist whose views tracked closely with the radical Muslim Brotherhood. The backstory to the alleged killing has many layers, the authors claim, including calculated ties to the Obama administration.
Somehow, Brzezinski dovetailed the affair with the Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
“In these past two news cycles Donald Trump has gotten really good at being a really bad president,” Brzezinski said.
“If you look at the Brett Kavanaugh hearings that was exactly what he wanted. He sowed doubt on both sides. He had both sides fighting each other, and he got exactly what he wanted — which was someone that is unfit for the highest court in the land, elevated to the highest court in the land,” she said.
“Now, he is sowing doubt in our foreign policy. He’s making us look like a joke around the world, she added.
Ironically, Mika Brzezinski’s father, Zbigniew Brzezinski, was President Jimmy Carter’s National Security Advisor from 1977-81. The period is widely viewed as a time when American foreign policy was dangerously ineffective at dealing with the Soviet Union.
“We need nothing from Saudi Arabia,” Scarborough told Colbert.
“You know how we can make this end?” he asked the audience, “For everybody who gives a damn about this Republic to go out 19 days from now and vote.”
Scarborough then called Trump a racist, and said “If Trump’s race fueled presidency doesn’t get you out to the polls, nothing will.”
