(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) A 27-year-old illegal immigrant drunkenly drove the wrong way down an interstate and killed two people last Thursday, WRAL reported.
Anibal Raul Ambrocio-Chilel traveled eastbound down the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
He had three passengers with him.
Rupresh Uprety and Pricil Chundapurakal died from the crash, while Ambrocio-Chilel and another passenger suffered injuries.
Ambrocio-Chilel hit a pickup truck, but the driver of the truck was not seriously injured.
On Sunday, the state charged Ambrocio-Chilel with two counts of felony death, one count of driving while impaired, and one count of reckless driving to endanger, WRAL reported.
Authorities hold Ambrocio-Chilel at the Wake County jail on a $410,000 bond. He appeared in court yesterday.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a detainer on him due to data showing he is an illegal resident subject to deportation.
A 911 call detailed the scene: “I was going one direction. They were coming up beside me on the other side of the road, and I noticed them, and then they hit somebody,” a man told the dispatcher.
“I could tell they hit something because I could see, I could see a plume of something, I don’t know what. So, they may have hit the rail, but I think it was another car.”
The North Carolina Department of Transportation reports that nearly 150 people have died as a result of more than 500 wrong-way crashes on the freeway between 2000 and 2016.
