Howard Schultz teams with avowed NeverTrumper Steve Schmidt…
(Michael Barnes, Liberty Headlines) Howard Schultz, the liberal billionaire who until recently was chairman of Starbucks coffee, is assembling a team of public relations experts for a possible 2020 challenge to President Donald Trump.
Among his key picks is the late John McCain’s former 2008 campaign manager, and staunch “NeverTrumper,” Steve Schmidt.
Both men are vocal opponents of the president, but Schmidt’s rhetoric has long been over-the-top and unhinged.
Recently, he compared Trump’s handling of the Central American migrant caravans to the Nazi burning of the German Reichstag.
He attacked Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham — a longtime friend of McCain — for pushing back against unfounded rape accusations against Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and called first lady Melania Trump a “con artist.”
Schmidt also wrongly predicted a GOP midterm election wipeout.
Now, he’s on Schultz’s payroll.
Schmidt is reportedly helping Schultz to prepare a publicity campaign for the Starbucks founder’s new book, “From the Ground Up: A Journey to Reimagine the Promise of America.”
Such books are essentially campaign documents.
Schultz stepped down from his long-held CEO position with Starbucks in June, the same month he told the New York Times, “For some time now, I have been deeply concerned about our country, the growing division at home and our standing in the world.”
In May, he deflected a Starbucks public relations nightmare by blaming Trump for creating a racial divide.
An incident at a Philadelphia Starbucks made national headlines when police were called to remove two non-paying black men who refused to leave the store after challenging employees.
Schultz infamously ordered all 8,000 Starbucks stores to close and all 175,000 company employees to take part in anti-bias training.
Schultz has not announced any formal plans to run and has only downplayed speculation.
Schmidt, however, is chomping at the bit to attack Trump and banish his supporters from political power.
After casting his lot as a NeverTrumper, and ending up a Republican consultant without any viable GOP candidates, Schmidt left the Republican Party — and he wanted everyone to know.
“The Republicans fundamentally have a nut problem,” he said.
Schmidt is also a political analyst for MSNBC.
