GQ Names Kaepernick Its ‘Citizen of the Year’

(LifeZette) GQ magazine has named former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick “Citizen of the Year” in its latest issue.

GQ Names Kaepernick Its 'Citizen of the Year'The magazine ran a feature story on the controversial athlete, entitled “Colin Kaepernick Will Not Be Silenced.”

Kaepernick was the first to popularize kneeling during the playing of the national anthem before NFL games.

The article was a big and predictable wet kiss to Kaepernick, who has arguably gotten far more attention in his post-football career than he ever did while he played on the field.

PREVIOUSLY: Kaepernick Files Grievance Claiming NFL Owners Colluded

“Colin also made it clear to us that he intended to remain silent,” the article read when referring to the 30-year-old. “As his public identity has begun to shift from football star to embattled activist, he has grown wise to the power of his silence. It has helped his story go around the world. It has even provoked the ire and ill temper of [President] Donald Trump.”

Linebacker Eric Reid of the 49ers, who has also kneeled during the national anthem at football games, was quoted in the story as saying he wanted to get Kaepernick back into the NFL — something that seems almost impossible at this point.

“My goal this year has been to get the narrative back on track,” Reid said. “We started having communications with the NFL, and they said they’re going to help us make progress on these issues. But the next step is to get Colin back in the NFL. Because he’s the one that started this … Now it’s time for him to get back in the league.”

Kaepernick filed a grievance last month, stating NFL owners had conspired to keep him unsigned because of his kneeling protests.

The grievance is absurd, considering Kaepernick had poor stats as a quarterback to begin with — and he was the one who opted out of his contract with the 49ers in March. He took the risk of being a free agent in a league in which he was making headlines more for his political statements than for his game plays.

Kaepernick reportedly landed a high-paying book deal recently, and now he’s on the cover of magazines like GQ — so there’s not much the former athlete has to complain about, all told. He turned a fading athletic career into a platform celebrated by leftists — who want politics to infect and permeate every aspect of life, including sports.

    GQ a.k.a. Gutless Quackery.

    • icur1096

Good one @Bishop351. Question? Besides stirring up controversy & teaching hate & having total disrespect for America & Our Brave Soldiers, he’s always played very “bad” football. No offense, but not a good looking man or a stylish dresser. I could go on and on, but what possibly could be GQ’s criteria for this?
      Just Wow!!! SMH!!!!

Wait… what? A self-promoting, self-involved, self-congratulatory, leftist “mens” magazine named a self-promoting, self-involved, self congratulatory, no-talent leftist sports figure as their man of the year? Gee… stunning. Aren’t you stunned? Yup. Surrrrrrrprised indeed.

    • tCotUS

Well, you outlined them perfectly. Thanks

    Pampered Whiner of the year.

    • worn out 123

      PW’d by a muslime.

  • sue

Wow! Real hero he is not

  • Dan

This RAG of a magazine just wants to be controversial.
The vast majority of the USA People know Kapernick is way out of line in his viewpoint and in his own real life experience. The actual facts, statistics and data prove that this entire NFL protest thing is false.
The NFL is intimidated by the NFLPA and SOME of the players.
So they decided to turn a blind eye to this situation when Lap first started it.
They should have acted swiftly and with strength to enforce it’s own rules.
They did not, and now they have a problem.
If I were an owner I would this directly on Roger Goodell.
Roger failed to protect the shield and he should be replaced because of it.

    • OttoZeit

GQ’s stance is not “controversial” to its regular readers; it’s what most of them already believe. GQ is just trying to ride the current wave of Kaepernick-philia and pick up some more readers among the PC crowd and the brainless left in general.

  • tes d’aless

GQ what a joke! Plus no one said Crappersick wasn’t going to be silenced – he should have some sense and have respect for the flag. go peddle your plight and ignorance somewhere else.

    • Scuttlebutt

North Korea & “Rocket Boy” would love to have him:)

      • Alan

I’ll chip in for his one way ticket.

  • holland180

Well for sure….GQ Powers that Be,,,,are liberal democrats so what else can you expect but to have them favor a Leftist Anti American POS like Kapershit. I would not read their mag is you gave it to me…

  • Robert Jourdan

WTF is GQ magazine,is it for gays & liberials ? If that’s the best person they can pick for man of the year ,it’s a rag that’s not worth printing. God Bless America !

  • Paulita Gilberto

Trying to keep up with Rolling Stone by having the radical Muslim of the minute on their cover. K-man is nowhere near as cute, though as the younger Boston murderer. I only looked at GQ one time because Cal Ripkin was in there and they even made him look like a sissy. I’m tired of hearing about “toxic masculinity.” The problem is the emasculation of the free world’s male population so the only warriors left will be radical Islamists.

  • Sarse

A-hole of the year would be more like it!

  • gvette

This is almost as funny as the black caucus naming fat assed Maxine Waters women of the year. My how the left loves it’s worthless blacks!

‘Kneeling cards’ would commemorate disdainful athletes
    By Dave Skocik
On this Veterans Day weekend, I offer the following comments.
From a veteran’s eyes, I see the flag controversy by professional athletes as a hostage situation. Unless the country meets their vague demands for “social justice,” they will continue to use their public forum to publicly disrespect the nation, its symbol and its veterans.
The American flag, the most recognized banner in the world, represents our nation and its accomplishments. There is no other nation that has rebuilt its enemies or stood for freedom across the globe at enormous cost.
It is the banner under which our veterans rally, fight, die and are covered by when they return home.
One of the most iconic photos of World War II was the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. The five Marines and a Navy corpsman, three of whom were later killed, were not the focus of the picture. It was the flag because it represented America on an island battlefront that killed 6,800 Americans.
Our flag flies over military cemeteries in 16 foreign countries honoring over 207,636 U.S. war dead. Millionaire athletes who believe their country deserves public disdain should ask the millions who have crossed our borders why they want to be here.
Ask veterans of all backgrounds and ethnicities who have endured multiple tours in hostile environments where people want to kill you. Ask the man or woman who has lived in mud or sand, or been wounded, held in captivity, seen friends die or is being treated for PTSD. Meet with families of the fallen who have only a folded flag presented “on behalf of a grateful nation.”
Many nations require citizens to give something back, whether military or civic service, for the benefits they receive. It’s the fair and socially just thing to do. Why should only 1 percent of our population be responsible for protecting the rest?
As Jane Fonda can attest, veterans have long memories.
If professional athletes want to use their media platform to engage in political issues, in the same spirit of freedom of speech, I propose the following, beginning in December.
Just as coalition forces created a deck of cards to help U.S. forces identify Saddam’s top lieutenants during Desert Storm, someone should create a deck of “Kneeling” cards to commemorate athletes who feel it necessary to publicly display their disdain for our nation and its flag.
Each card would include a photo of the athlete from any sport taking a knee or seated during the national anthem with the date, time and game. They could become collector’s items for future reference with proceeds dedicated to veterans hospitals and nursing homes.
The project could include an associated website listing the mailing address of every franchise so that offended ticket holders could document their concerns and demand refunds.
Similarly, school teams funded by taxpayers should also hear from offended boosters. Playing to half-empty stands would send a clear message that the flag is a third-rail issue to much of the country.
If you’re not willing to stand for your country, what are you willing to stand for?
EDITOR’S NOTE: Dave Skocik of Dover is a Vietnam veteran and president of the Delaware Veterans Coalition.

  • mauisheri

You have to be kidding!! WTH is GQ smoking????

  • Timothy Toroian

HE HASN’T DONE ANYTHING!!! Jeez! Not as bad as Barry Obama getting Peace Prize prior to serving in office. Continues in the mode of giving certificates of participation, even if you couldn’t throw a ball. Kneel on one knee and then piss and moan because nobody wants a quarterback who’d lost a step and never was a great passer and you get an award? Damn!

  • Rocketop O’Shea

Poor old “Kaepernick Will Not Be Silenced”, can’t get a job, can’t keep a job…butt man of the year, Wow. Says something about GQ doesn’t it.

  • Sue

GQ, the magazine for metrosexual men. I’ll bet like playboy, they read it for the articles. HA!!!!!

  • Joseph F. Riggi

I wonder how many people who exists on their income from football games like this man of the year? The grocery stores, restaurants, bars, concession stand workers and people who provide parking at the games have all suffered from this self-serving, leftist Millionaire. GQ needs it’s head examined.

  • Gregg Parker

Next stop head of the DNC…

  • Carolann Enkhaus

Citizen of the year…I think it should be communist of the year

  • Jim Hays

Let KAPERNICK take his intention and belief/antics about not standing, etc. and try to explain all of this to a U.S. Marine. But check your hospital insurance first…

  • Loretta Marie Stock Kierein

What a tragedy that they keep giving awards to worthless people (black and white!) when there are so many wonderful ones to award and recognize. Making these worthless ones heroes is one reason WHY so many of our young have turned to crime and/or drugs! We have taken God, heroes of good and strong character and even teaching parents away from the young and wonder what is happening. with them. Duh. get our heads out of you know where and admit the past generations for all their faults were much better as leaders and parents then our present ones! (no I am not saying all folks in the past were good role models – just the percentage was different!) Truth hurts and denial is strong….. PS Try doing some study Blacks – Whites were NOT the only ones owning slaves – Many a free black did too. And in Africa – guess who was selling the blacks to white slavers! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!!

  • Philly is a toilet

I hope the NFL goes bankrupt and never returns.

  • Henry Gregg Nash

I didn’t know that kneeling during the National Anthem could put you on the cover of magazine!!!!!

  • bill14729 .

Never heard of GQ must be a BS Liberal Magazine

  • Guest

GQ, I in guess that stands for Gaff Quotient. Another case of semi-literate, pseudo intellectual millennial morons that don’t have a clue what America’s history, Founding, Founders, Constitution, laws and spirit stand for. The commies warned us they would infiltrate our education system in the 50’s, and in spite of the intelligent politicians of that era that tried to prevent Commies and Islamists from immigrating to the US, the corruption eventually gave way to PC acquiescence. So now we are faced with the spirituality lobotomized, brain dead denizens of the socialist schools of propaganda, that have bought into the egalitarian utopian vision of the naive infantile Marxists professors, feeding off the largess of the capitalist system they want to destroy. There’s been a symbol for. This malaise throughout the history of many cultures with its origins dating back to the oldest of spiritual origins. And that is the dragon swallowing it’s own tail.

  • RealAmerican407

““My goal this year has been to get the narrative back on track,”

I wasn’t aware the anti-law enforcement narrative every went away?

You are no hero. You are perpetuating a myth in order to stereotype law enforcement. You were escorted on and off the field each game by armed law enforcement. You have done absolutely nothing but divide.

  • Barbara Lewis

I have never read the mag and definitely have no intention of starting now. Way to go dummies. Hope you lose all of your readers and go bankrupt.

  • Kathryn Jordan

I guess this is what one gets when one decides to not respect the American Flag. I don’t know if I should wish him “good luck” in getting a football job. Maybe he can coach football. What he should do is protest the treatment of blacks from the police when he is on his own time. Did he learn a lesson from this? Who knows.

  • Farte’

The other loser Eric Reid wants him back in the NFL because CK started it all. Sorry but the NFL is performance based, affirmative action does not apply.

  • John

So he’s a hero to metrosexuals yippee. REAL MEN DON’T READ THAT B$

  • Donald Lindsey

GQ is a racist socialist mag. that is only good to use in an old outhouse as shi* paper

Colon Kaepernick is a loser apathetic fraud a race-baiter an activist for criminals a low-life Thug Kaepernick is an GQ stoop to New Low really pathetic to pick that trash Colon Kaepernick

  • Greg

He should have been named “buffoon of the year” what would be a more fitting description of him. As far as that Marxist magazine is concerned it’s understandable as it’s par for the course for them.

  • Louie Rey

Does anyone need any further proof that ALL aspects of the mainstream media are just a bunch of liberal partisan ideologues? Kaepernick, Citizen of the Year? Really? Only if he’s a citizen of Iran maybe but of America? Not even close. If GQ wanted to name a sports figure as Citizen of the Year how in God’s name (and maybe that’s it, they’re godless) did they pass on J.J. Watt? A Houston Texan, who I believe was on injured reserve at the time, started a charity to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey that destroyed much of that city. He was hoping to reach a goal of about $250,000. Instead, his charity garnered more than $37 million. Think about that. And yet GQ would rather honor an ingrate who has been disrespecting America, the country that has afforded everything in his life, in an effort to be an activist protesting perceived racial injustice for over a year. Right. Does it get any more pathetic?

    • Fed up!

There’s a no brainer JJ Watt verses a anti American low life.

  • Sidney Rhodes

Maybe GQ can help support him cause he ain’t playing football. The owners didn’t blackball him. The fans did. The man is stupid.

  • Ron

GQ is still being published??? Wow…I thought that rag had gone bankrupt years ago! By the way, the TOTAL NATIONWIDE BOYCOTT of the NFL and its sponsors should continue indefinitely!

    • worn out 123

      You got that right.

  • normie

this should kill their readership. What a disgraceful act? GQ TAKES A KNEE!!!!!

  • Gary Smith

J J Watt and the Marine who ran 31 marathons do not count?

    • Scuttlebutt

Colin Krappernick couldn’t hold a candle to J.J. Watt. NOW THERE is a real American NFL football player, for young kids to look up to:) Krappernick is toast & he know’s it.

DON’T KNOW THAT ONE !!!! Is it kind of like Hustler magazine ??????

  • Busdriver Bill

Time to “Draw and Quarter” GQ.

  • Chalrley Walker

Colin used his hardearned 13-years of football bruises and the only platform available to PROTEST rampant police murders of unarmed African Americans. There was a police murder in the next county, 14 miles from my house. Live video proved an mentally handicapped adult was standing with hands raised at head level as ordered by the closest officer. An officer 50 yards distant to one side saw light reflected from this man’s harmonica and out a bullet in his ear.
A skinny 12-year old playing cowboys and indians in a public park, is gunned down by two vigilante cops driving up, jumping out of their patrol car with guns blazing.
A n officer orders a man to present his ID and registration. When the citizen compllies, five bullets at point blank range.
These are just about .0001% of the WRONG police murders of black citizens within just the past few years.
This is what Kapernick and the majority of NFL players, white and black, are protesting.
As a combat infantryman, who spent months in an army hospital, I understand I was fighting for every American’s freedom. That includes freedom of African American men in particular to walk down the street toward their home without being stopped by a cop who clearly does not know the people living in that neighborhood. As a senior white southern republican male, I have never been stopped by police, except for speeding.
A 34-year-old Harvard MBA who happens to be black, has been stopped dozens of times, from Los Angeles to Atlanta, to Raleigh, to Baltimore, to NYC and Boston.
    His crime, breathing while black.
