(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, introduced the Legal Workforce Act, which would institute an E-verify program for American workers.
This would mandate that employers verify employee’s citizenship or legal worker status before giving them jobs.
Smith explained how the E-verify program would work in a video from the House Judiciary Committee.
Opponents of E-verify say it’s too complicated to institute nationwide, but Smith contends that the program would be easier to use than the traditional system.
“E-Verify is a web-based system and is a 21st century update to the current paper-based, I-9 system,” he said. “E-Verify quickly confirms 99.8% of work-eligible employees and takes less than two minutes per person to use.”
Smith says the program will ensure jobs go to American citizens, and he cited popular support for the plan.
“Outside evaluations have found that the vast majority of employers using E-Verify believe it to be an effective and reliable tool for checking the legal status of their employees.” Smith said. “And approximately 70 percent of Americans believe that all U.S. employers should be required to use this program.”
The House Judiciary Committee will begin debate on the bill tomorrow.
