Is Chuck Schumer Really the One Running the Senate?

‘They seem to wield more power than you would expect for a minority party…’

(LifeZette) After taking a beating from his own supporters following an ill-fated government shutdown showdown in late January, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has been on a roll.

Over the last three weeks, Schumer has repeatedly out-maneuvered Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

Last week, with Schumer’s support, Congress passed a two-year budget outline that repeals spending caps imposed in 2011.

The result means approval of hundreds of billions of dollars in additional spending that checks off numerous items on the progressive Democrat’s wish list for expansion of domestic government programs.

It is not apparent what Schumer had to concede in return, other than additional military spending.

And that does not seem to be much of a concession; after all, Democratic members of Congress like to build weapons in their districts, too.

The one thing Schumer did not get in the budget was a “fix” for the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, created by former President Barack Obama via executive order in an action widely viewed as unconstitutional.

The DACA move gave quasi-legal status to young adult illegal immigrants who were brought to American as children.

But Democrats will get a shot at amnesty, too, beginning Monday when the Senate takes up a “blank bill” to that end on the floor.

It’s enough to make some observers wonder if Schumer could be any more successful if he had “majority” in his title.

Mitch McConnell Doubts if Trump Can Save His Presidency

“Mitch McConnell doesn’t run the Senate. Chuck Schumer does,” quipped Jason Pye, vice president of legislative affairs at the small-government activist group FreedomWorks.

Chris Chmielenski, director of content and activism at NumbersUSA, said it is fair to wonder whether Schumer is the real leader of the Senate.

“We’ve been asking that question for years,” he said.

NumbersUSA advocates tougher immigration policies and controls.

Christopher Devine, a political science professor at the University of Dayton in Ohio, said the Senate’s arcane rules give a great deal of leverage to the minority party.

Most measures require 60 votes, which in the current Senate, means Republicans have to win at least nine Democratic votes if the GOP senators stick together.

Schumer ‘got a pretty good deal.’ As a result, Devine said, the minority leader can block the majority party’s agenda in many cases and negotiate huge concessions.

But he was hard-pressed to think of another minority leader in recent history who has been as successful as Schumer in advancing his agenda rather than simply blocking the majority party.

“They seem to wield more power than you would expect for a minority party,” he said. “I think it is fair to say he got a pretty good deal for his interests.”

The way the budget battle played out has opponents of mass immigration worried about how the immigration debate might go.

The Senate will start an open debate on immigration Monday, and McConnell has promised every senator will have a chance to offer amendments that will receive up-or-down votes.

“I don’t work in Vegas. It’s hard to put odds on something,” said Ira Mehlman, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). “What we should have started from was the president’s original position … I’d like to play cards with these guys.”

Mehlman was referring to a long list of principles that President Donald Trump laid down shortly after announcing in September 2017 that he would end DACA by March 5.

It included a long list of border security measures and reform of the existing legal immigration system.

Since then, Trump has widened the population that would benefit — from about 690,000 DACA enrollees to 1.8 million young illegal immigrants — and narrowed his demands to full funding of a border wall and other security measures, including a gradual end to the ability of citizens to sponsor extended family members for immigration and the elimination of the diversity visa lottery that awards about 50,000 green cards each year to applicants chosen randomly from around the world.

Supporters of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act hope the process will lead to something close to what they have proposed — legal status and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants whose parents brought them to the country.

And they don’t want the law to include a border wall or and end to so-called chain migration.

Republicans divided on DACA. Mehlman said the danger for groups like his that favor lower levels of legal immigration and stricter enforcement of current immigration restrictions is that an open process could take advantage of Republican divisions.

“The Democrats have a unified position — they want a clean DREAM Act,” he said. “The Republicans are all over the place.”

Chmielenski of NumbersUSA said a backroom deal by McConnell and Schumer probably could result in legislation that would pass the chamber.

But if it is truly an open process that allows for unlimited amendments, he said, the prospects for the final bill are dicier.

“If that’s the way it goes, I don’t think anything will pass,” he said.

If the Senate did pass a bill, that would leave it up to the House of Representatives, where the last major amnesty bill died four years ago.

Paul Ryan Reportedly Said No Chance for Border Wall

Paul Ryan/Photo by Gage Skidmore (CC)

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has promised not to bring immigration legislation to the floor unless a majority of Republicans in the House support it and Trump would sign it.

That would doom the effort — unless Trump swung his support behind it.

The president’s oscillation on DACA has troubled immigration hard-liners.

“Trump is the wild card,” Chmielenski said. “We don’t know.”

But if Trump holds firm on his demands, Chmielenski said, Ryan would face a “revolt” in his caucus if he tried to muscle through a bill with mostly Democratic votes.

Devine, the Dayton political science professor, said the fact that conservatives felt betrayed by the budget debate could make an immigration deal harder, as Republicans in Congress grow weary of bucking their base so soon on another high-profile issue.

Devine added that the budget deal came together because defense hawks in the GOP and Democrats decided to achieve their goals by spending money on everyone’s priorities.

Immigration defies that kind of compromise, he said.

“DACA, or immigration, is not a problem you can solve by spending more money,” he said.

Who ever accused McConnell of ever running the senate? We all know who the leader is and he is the minority leadership.

Is Chuck Schumer Really the One Running the Senate?

NO, More likely it’s Obama, and Schumer is just the Front man/.

    • GomeznSA

I won’t disagree except to point out the it is the string pullers behind barry that are really the ones doing the ruining, er um running things. I’m not sure that barry ever had an original thought of his own

There you go Obama was just a puppet

        • Mary Cosmah-Johnson

Of the very ones that is allowed to come to our country. And George soros.

    • Mary Cosmah-Johnson

This is so true. When and until Obama is made to shut up, stay out of the government businesses, to which the people elected a real man, that loves our country, people like Schumer etc will listen too Obama and do his wily ways.I
The 8 yrs he almost ruined America, now be is still pulling his puppets in Congress strings to keep immigrants coming and bringing their ways and nutty beliefs to get to try and take over our free country.
Write, email, anyway you can, IF you are truly an American, tell those that claim to represent your state, to shut up, stop the immigration policies that let anyone and everyone in. Let our President do what he promised, make our AMERICA GREAT 👍 again

  • Kathryn Jordan

God, I hope Schumer is not running the Senate. He’s just the minority leader. McConnell is the Majority leader. We have two leaders who can at least try to work together. I guess this is a case of wait and see what happens next.

  • RealAmerican407

I am a Florida resident and I write Rubio all the time to let him know how disgusted I am of his votes. Again and again he falls in line. The GOP are Democrats is Republican disguise.

They finally had a chance to start reeling in our debt but instead set us on a course to end up just like Greece.

  • Johnny Rotten

Build the Wall!! Surely $4.4 Trillion should have some crumbs for border security! I mean if we’re serious about the “Opiod Crisis”, get really serious and shut off the heroin/fentenyl spigot.
Unless of course the hullabaloo is to get folks off prescription opioids and onto street opioids?!?!

    • Paul Williamson

It is the white racist run corporations, big pharmacy, who is making money off the opioid crisis, and it is the uneducated, lazy, stupid white Trumpies who are the victims… good riddance to both of them.

      • Johnny Rotten

Engage your brain before typing responses. You are part of the problem.

Better reign in that a–hole.. He does not have the authority to run things…MY REPUBLICAN PARTY better grow a pair and take charge !! HEAR THAT MCCONNELL… If you cannot handle this….GET OUT NOW !!

    • deanbob

Fat chance; McConnell has, IMHO, been the feckless GOP senate leader since he achieved/ascended to the position. But what of the the other conservative senators? I busted my rear end to get Ted Cruz into the senate along with many other grass roots workers. I wonder if they feel as let down as I do? Mike Lee is what I expected Cruz be like – supporting and defending the constitution, while reducing the spending and size of the federal government.

    • Raymond Miller

Our Republican party needs to get rid of Mitch McConnell. I can’t decide if he is just in over his head or stupid, but he sure isn’t on OUR side, I am sick of his toothless grin.

      • Chuck Grigg

The Republicans need to learn to treat the democrats as they treat Republicans when they have the majority. In other words ignore their wants and tell them to STFU, move to the rear of the bus we won as I remember them doing in ’09.

    CRUZ FOR MAJORITY LEADER

  • Dorothy Foster

i am appealing to President TRUMP… Get a handle on McConnell ….

    • SoManyWhiners

Appeal to Kentuckians to get rid of Mitch McConnel.

      • Prophet

I got news for you- Mitch won’t be seeking another term. He’s gone. This is why he has lost control of the senate, really he dose not care anymore. He’s only wanting to do what time he has left and retire. As a party right now we are only at about half United. Should we get united behind President Trump we could be in charge of America for the next 100 yeRs. President Trump will get realectef however many voters have lost there desire thus won’t get out and vote in mid terms for the simple reason they feel there vote won’t matter because leadership won’t do anything anyway. It’s a shame this I will tell you. What I would like to see- we Republican voters get the fire just one more time and keep the house and elect enough to gain total control of senant 60 or 63 votes. This would make us unstopibl. The problem with republican leadership is each leader thinks for themselves and their voters unlike the Democrats that think like leaders of a communism govern body where they walk in step not really caring about their country nor voters

        • SoManyWhiners

The problem is: whenever one party rules everything they go way overboard. I would just like to see ONE politician keep their word. Like getting rid of Obamacare completely.

      • Mary Cosmah-Johnson

He really needs to quit.. I am a kentuckian..never voted for mitch, ever. Was praying President Trump could bring him around. But like so many there is too much stuff in their time I. Washington, wow, it would explode.
The crazy business of Judge Moore was one, and all the allegations of sexual abuse, the so call big guns in congress, will never get hit, the little guys like Portman.
Since President Jackson affairs, and his love Washington has been about hidden affairs. But when did it become the business of our government to put their nose in a married couples quarrels. And why would those two ex wives me
ing it out now. Will the anti Trump crowd never stop.
As for General Kelly, remember he is a military man, they don’t get involved in their soldiers personal lives. Except in private.

Just let the stupid DACA debacle created by Obama, expire.
DEPORT ALL illegals! It is NOT the fault of the American people that the
poor little dreamers, only know America as their home. It is the fault of Obama and their
criminal “parents” that brought them here. If they could adapt to America
as children, then they can adapt to the home nation of their parents as
grown-ups. These are not helpless infants, they are adults now. WE the people
owe them nothing, sorry Nancy! WE cannot afford to support the world. WE should
not have to. Demonrats are stupid to not see that! You are NOT speaking for the
    majority of Americans.

    • James Hopkins

They have threatened to leave if nothing gets done about daca. I heard that from some celebs and I see they are still here. If they hate America so much then go back to your home of origin.

      • Deplorable Irredeemable Susan

        Right you are!

  • Trisha55

McConnell and Schumer are prime examples of why we need to have voter-imposed term limits. These idiots are never going to retire and it is too easy to get hooked on the power and money for the newcomers. The only way we can get control of our government back and stop all this back scratching is to vote them out. I hope I am not the only one brave enough to vote libertarian to get rid of a RINO.

We The People control the whole Congress Of Senators and House Of Representatives in total of 538 Electors to represent their home States. They must do their constitutional jobs on various issues of domestic and foreign affairs; especially, they are working on DACA and immigration reform to amend or change or reject or object immigration laws. Have they follow the US Constitution by laws and orders? They try to soften the constitution laws to allow DACA and illegal immigrants in the United States. It’s unfair justice for all legal immigrants and law of residence up to ten years to become citizenship. No US entitlements will be given to DACA and illegal immigrants even they work as taxpayers. No Federal benefits for them costing American taxpayers billion dollars. The congress must carry their constitutional duty to protect American citizens and American native-born citizens. When mid-term candidates start before November Election Day. We The People will elect more Republicans than distrust democrats and their disgraceful attitudes on SOTU few weeks ago. We The People could see the Democrats downfalls turn to far left from true center of politics. They hate our President Trump and his agendas. He did a great job to improve economic businesses and more job creations. He also restores the true American value. We ignore all negative mainstream media except Fox News channel. We reject anyone who intend to disrupt our country. We must act together in harmony for our country’s sake. Anyone who pervert our US Constitution, We The People will file lawsuit against them and will take them to grand jury of US Supreme Court. All negative cable news networks and the false press may loose their business licenses in the court of the law.

  • Larry Mace

The problem is, of course, the undemocratic 60-vote rule in the Senate. Even though Republicans have a numeric majority in the Senate, a minority party with 41 or more votes can dictate policy as it sees fit. The Republican majority should change the rules of the Senate, so that majority rule is implemented, and super-majority rule is abolished.

The more outrageous they become and the fact they totally disregard the American people, the more out of touch the liberals become. When looking at the actions over the years, the democrats. Prominent liberals didn’t oppose immigration a decade ago. Most
acknowledged its benefits to America’s economy and culture. They
supported a path to citizenship for the undocumented. Still, they
routinely asserted that low-skilled immigrants depressed the wages of
low-skilled American workers and strained America’s welfare state. And
they were far more likely than liberals today are to acknowledge that. There are several explanations
for liberals’ shift. The first is that they have changed because the
reality on the ground has changed, particularly as regards illegal
immigration. In the two decades preceding 2008, the United States
experienced sharp growth in its undocumented population. Since then, the
    numbers have leveled off.

A larger explanation is more political. Between 2008 and 2016, Democrats
became more and more confident that the country’s growing Latino
population gave the party an electoral edge. To win the presidency,
Democrats convinced themselves, they didn’t need to reassure white
people skeptical of immigration so long as they turned out their Latino
base came out, as the fastest-growing sector of the American electorate stampeded
toward the Democrats in 2016 November election. The democrats seem to believe it will reflect poorly on the Republicans. As the Democrats grew more reliant on Latino votes, they were more
influenced by pro-immigrant activism. While Obama was running for
reelection, immigrants’-rights advocates launched protests against the
administration’s deportation practices; these protests culminated, in
June 2012, in a sit-in at an Obama campaign office in Denver. Ten days
later, the administration announced that it would defer the deportation
of undocumented immigrants who had arrived in the U.S. before the age of
16 and met various other criteria. Obama was facing growing pressure from Latino leaders and Democrats
who warned that because of his harsh immigration enforcement, his
support was lagging among Latinos who could be crucial voters in his
    race for re-election.

    Define “running the Senate”.
If by that they mean is Schumer doing the bidding of George Soros through the DNC, then yes.
This is politics 101 folks, follow the money.

Those that are “fighting” for the illegals, are so far removed from, US, in their “fenced” properties, they don’t see them and the armed guards, shield them. When those things “can be removed” and they have to come, face to face with them and US, on a daily bases, the People and our concerns, , then they can speak!! I dream, also, that they start living among “the real” people that elect them, then and only then, will they understand, what we see and live with(among), daily.
