(Paul Chesser, Liberty Headlines) Endorsing Donald Trump’s threat earlier this week to shut down the government if Congress does not begin to fund a border wall, recently retired Rep. Jason Chaffetz said on “Fox and Friends” Thursday that the president should “hold his ground.”
In fact, the former chairman of the House Oversight Committee said, it wouldn’t be Republicans who would be shutting down the government if it came to that — it would be Democrats.
“Look, the president wants a border wall,” Chaffetz said. “I think the country wants a border wall. He campaigned on it…Funding a border wall is in the best interest of the United States…”
“Democrats don’t want to do it?” interjected show host Brian Kilmeade.
“No, I don’t care,” Chaffetz retorted. “The president should hold his ground on this one. Absolutely.”
The former Utah congressman added that President Trump should remain strong in the face of waffling — or outright opposition — from weak-kneed Republicans.
“The only ones that’s going to shut down the government are going to be the Democrats in the Senate,” Chaffetz said. “So, Republicans, I think, are wholly behind this. There are going to be some that are going to waffle and get away from it.
