‘…Nothing more than an apparatchik for radical, open border, socialist Democrats…’
Brooks’s office even issued a press release touting his speech, which followed a week of sensationalist and horribly biased reporting.
“Mr. Speaker,” the congressman began, “while CNN has had a rotten, no good, horrible week, the American people have had a great week because last week exposed the CNN vitriol, prejudice, bias and deception that crown CNN the Fake News King.”
The week was dominated by breathless coverage of two news stories that seemed to confirm both the wildest dreams and the most paranoid fantasies of modern liberals, with the initial narratives of both being undermined by later facts
The first was the false story that President Donald Trump had directed his lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress (a felony), and the second was the lopsided coverage of the Covington Catholic High School boys who were confronted by a Native American activist during the March for Life Rally.
Brooks noted that CNN “drooled” over what he called “President Trump impeachment propaganda” in a BuzzFeed story that was later completely discredited, to the point where Special Counsel Robert Mueller issued a rare public statement rebutting it.
Next, Brooks assaulted CNN’s coverage of the Covington Catholic boys, saying the network “viciously and wrongly attacked, ridiculed, slandered, and maligned” the students.
He added that the boys’ status as mostly white, male Catholics made them ripe for prejudice on behalf of the network, which could not restrain itself from going after them.
Brooks concluded by ripping into CNN’s laughable “most trusted name in news” slogan, calling the network “nothing more than an apparatchik for radical, open border, socialist Democrats” and that they had more than earned the title Fake News King.
Missing from Brooks’ speech: President Trump’s description of the fake news media as “Enemy of the People.” But the sentiment was there.
And if media misbehavior on the scale of last week continues, perhaps even more Americans will come to agree with Trump and King that the press is a hostile institution.
Brooks represents Alabama’s 5th congressional district.
He ran for U.S. Senate in 2017 but failed to advance to the runoff, which was won by former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore.
