Poll: 8-in-10 Gun Owners ‘Ready to Kill’ if Threatened

(Washington Examiner) With gun ownership on the rise and the numbers of those with concealed carry permits exploding, a new poll shows that Americans are ready to use those weapons if threatened.

In a survey for Insurancequotes.com, 78 percent said that they are mentally and physically prepared to kill an intruder. And even those armed with less lethal weapons, such as pepper spray or a golf club, would kill if they had to.

Some 44 percent of homes have a gun, according to the Pew Research Center.

The thrust of the survey was to see how well prepared Americans are to handle an intruder and it appears they generally feel up to the task.

Overall, about 45 percent believe that they will face an intruder at some point.

Those who felt most threatened have “armed” themselves with security cameras.

The next choice was a gun, followed by pepper spray, an alarm system, a baseball bat and a golf club…

I hope and pray I never experience a home invasion. But if you aren’t ready to defend yourself and your family, with violence if necessary, then you seriously need to reevaluate your priorities. Some things are worth protecting.

Agreed…To me that also goes for Government threats

I feel sorry for those who live in states with draconian laws that limit what choices of firearms they can own for their personal defense. Where I am, I have very few limitations. Praise God!

Remember: you’re not just protecting yourself – you’re protecting the next victim, and the victim after that, who may not be able to defend themselves.

    • Yarbles

You are CORRECT! We have an obligation to protect ourselves and our families, but we also have an obligation to SOCIETY.

“Recognize and take solace that though we live in dark times, and evil men roam free, we are also here. We are the proper response to evil, and we have been placed here at this
time for a reason. Call it fate, call it destiny, call it coincidence, call it god, call it whatever you want, but the answer to evil is us.”

      Brandon Smith on Pizzagate

      • Mort Leith

Spoken like a true DEAD liberal…
        not that that’s a bad thing………….

        • Yarbles

Mort, just how many gunfights have you participated in?

Frankly, I think you missed the point.

My point and the one that Mr. Smith and others here are addressing, is that we are obliged, when confronted with EVIL, to obliterated it; REMOVE it from the face of the earth so that the next citizen and his family will not be confronted and possibly harmed by the same evil entity.

          • Mort Leith

And what is YOUR philosophy ? ?

            Is it:
o Oh, I live in a nice neighborhood so I don’t have to worry?
o Just give them what they want?
o Oh,, the cops will take care of me?

First of all, N1663Rs don’t rob other ‘broke-ass n1663rs’ in the ghetto cuz they know they’re broke,, they come to well-to-do neighborhoods where the mooney is.
Second of all, how do you know ‘what they want’? Most gangs have new members shoot someone regardless if they “give them what they want”. What if they want YOUR LIFE? Or start eyeballing your 10 yr old daughters?
Third, most violent gun crimes take only seconds,, when cops are MINUTES away ! !

Get a friggin clue already !

Best part of shooting to kill a home invader is your tax dollars go to more important things. Rather than thousands to prosecute a dumb fk. Then some fkd up lawyer says in court ” on he was abused as a child” BFS!!! There’s right and there’s wrong… Period. Every member of my household drills monthly with firearms. Cost of buying manicans every yr is worth it…

          • Shayne Jenkins

Never breathe the words “shoot to kill”. It’s bad for the rest of us, it’s really bad for you if ‘it’ happens. The lawyers will pull statements from every site you post to, see ‘shoot to kill’ and call it premeditation. Result – you go to jail for a legitimate act of self defense/defense of other innocent life, You ALWAYS SHOOT TO STOP THE THREAT, period. If the interloper dies from his/her wounds, then that’s too bad, since they were in commission of a felony.

          • john turner

Matt is absolutely correct. Lots of robbers think that most old people, retired, are defenseless, usually from past experiences . The LAW of averages will always catch up with them. Boom, they are dead.

          • CrustyOldGeezer

I’m still trying to understand your disagreement with “Yarbles”.

We ALL have an OBLIGATION to SOCIETY to be armed and trained in the usage.

The Militia is “WE, THE PEOPLE” and out Obligation is to our fellow Citizens.

“Tenche Coxe: “Who are the militia? Are they not
ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man
against his own bosom. Congress have no power to disarm the militia.
Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the
birthright of an American… The unlimited power of the sword is not in
the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust
in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people.” – Tenche Coxe,
The Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.”

          • Mort Leith

Then you clearly didn’t understand her post.
She disagreed that we all have an obligation to protect each other from evil.

So you either misunderstood her post or agreed that we do NOT ALL have and obligation to defend our own lives and those of our brothers and sisters from evil..
I don’t get it. Why would ANYONE refuse to defend innocent lives from evil?

          • J Bryan Jensen

Cowardice. The coward dies a thousand deaths, the brave only once.

          • CrustyOldGeezer

You assigned a gender to the poster that may, or may not be correct, but the message of an Obligation to band together to protect our families, neighborhoods and communities is accurate and desirable.
Each Citizen provides from their own abilities. not all soldiers carry weapons in war.

          • Mort Leith

            AMEN Crusty !
            that was my only point

          • CrustyOldGeezer

And Yarbles made exactly that point.

          • CrustyOldGeezer

            life happens that way sometimes.

I was called a liberal a few days back for quoting the Constitution, and the idiot called it the “farmers meeting notes” and had no value in America.

          • CrustyOldGeezer

          You missed Yarbles point.
The point I perceive you making, is that you do not understand that there are evil people in the world, and when you encounter one, you will have no appreciation for somebody who may put themselves in danger to aid you.

On the bright side, people that will put themselves in harms way to help members of society, don’t do it for gratitude.

        • nicki-baby

I totally can’t understand why 20% of humans would be willing to be murdered and not defend themselves…
How ignorant can you be ! ! ?

    • David Kledzik

That’s because liberalism is a mental disorder. But to be fair, there aren’t any liberals left. Liberal in the classic sense meant personal accountability, self reliance, and more freedoms. Marxists/progs./ demotards hijacked the liberal platform and turned it into something totally unrecognizable today.

      • J Bryan Jensen

Yep, they stole the Democrat party many decades ago and they were well on their way to stealing the Republican party (the RINOs). “We the people” are going to get rid of the RINOs over the next few years, and the communist Democrats will just dry up and blow away like a dog turd.

    • J Bryan Jensen

They are cowards and hope they can beg for their lives. I have some bad news for them. It most likely won’t work. The perp doesn’t want a witness to testify and put him in prison.

  • William M Armstrong

I am a United States Veteran and if I was faced with a home Intruder I would shoot him till he was dead in order to protect my Family as well as my self and any other Family that might be on his hit list in the future.

    • ted towny

The purpose is to kill as they have already made the wrong mistake and you have to keep the person from going any further for the benefit of others less defenseless. you can’t sit around to see if he turns into a good guy!

    • Zundfolge

I wouldn’t word it that way to the police … I’d say something more along the lines of “I feared for my life and the lives of my family so I shot until he no longer presented a threat.”

You shoot to end the threat, not to kill … now if they happen to die as a result, well that’s just how it goes.

      • CrustyOldGeezer

If DEAD is the most secure method of securing the threat, then dead he must be.
And if it takes 2 rounds to the back because he’s trying to escape to come back later with more friends and you get questioned about it…
Ask, why were the police not their to stop them from escaping?

        • J Bryan Jensen

Don’t shoot an escaping assailant in the back. I guarantee you will be tried for murder or manslaughter and probably convicted. Deadly force is only justified whether you are civilian or law enforcement, if you are in fear of losing your life or sustaining serious bodily harm at the moment you exercise deadly force.

          • Mort Leith

            Castle Doctrine states otherwise …
            Learn the law.

          • David Ciambrone

            J. Bryan?

We got here first and fine tuned the process.

You made some stupid assumptions based on your ego. Try not to do that in the future.

          • David Ciambrone

You are 100% correct. If the crook has broken off the attack and is fleeing and you shoot him in the back–YOU will go to prison. If he’s attacking or breaking in or is in your house without permission, then shoot and do it fast before he can leave. THAT IS THE CASTLE DOCTRINE. It isn’t a license to murder.

          • Mort Leith

            Nobody said it was

          • CrustyOldGeezer

That is “Legislated law” which is lower than Constitutional LAW.

I asked a judge in court one day, “Which is superior, legislated law or Constitutional Law”.

The stupid look lasted for several seconds before he noticed the entire Jury leaning forward waiting for his answer.
Even the DA took a different approach to the case…

        • Bill

The police arrived right after the last shot was fired.

          • CrustyOldGeezer

They had to check for “Stand Down” orders first?

      • J Bryan Jensen

Do you want your assailant to shoot you after you “wound”
him or her? The threat is ended when there is NO possibility that the assailant could pose a threat. Think about it. If the assailant threw their hands up in surrender not holding a weapon, of course you would not continue to shoot, because at that point your life is not in danger. Be careful they probably have a second weapon and are just waiting for you to let your guard down to pop you.

        • Mort Leith

You are destined to be one dead liberal who is too nice to evil criminals to know any better..
The “threat” is there until the evil is terminated…

Mort, you just aren’t having a good evening on here.

          • Mort Leith

Maybe you can go back to supporting McCain and other RINOs…
You sound like one of the lowly sick people who feel better about themselves by trashing others..
            How sad……..

          • turkeychoker

Me thinks you are a “plant” meant to disrupt, cause fights, and otherwise disturb rational discussion.

          • J Bryan Jensen

I’m former law enforcement Mort. The advice I give can keep you from being convicted for a crime and going to prison when all you were doing was defending yourself. We have a lot of liberal judges and juries waiting for us to slip up so they can put us away, so we have to be very circumspect in our use of firearms. It takes courage to use firearms correctly, because if not used in a cowardly manner there is always a risk involved. I have no compassion for violent criminals, but we have to put them down according to the rules or risk becoming one unwittingly.

          • Mort Leith

            I wouldn’t live in a libT ard-commie area for a $Million….
I LOVE Georgia and we are FREE men here…

EVERYONE here in GA carries legally !
And if any libT ard/DUMBycrat politician even THOUGHT about making illegal gun laws against our Constitution 2nd Amendment rights,
we’d tar & feather the liberal and mail him up north where he probably came from.
We have the legal right to not only carry concealed or OPEN,, but also the right to legally USE our lethal force when justified (Stand your Ground law).

So don’t lecture me with your yankee pretend cop bullshiit about legality…

          • J Bryan Jensen

I didn’t intend to ruffle your feathers Mort. Just trying to keep a fellow gunslinger out of trouble.

          • J Bryan Jensen

With your attitude Mort, you have no business owning firearms. You are the type of gun owner that gives the lefties and commies ammunition against responsible gun owners in their never ending efforts to get rid of the second amendment.

          • Mort Leith

            I have over 23 guns….
Here in GA,, we call that a ‘Starters Kit’…

          • J Bryan Jensen

I know David. Thank you. I’m just trying to help fellow gunslingers stay out of trouble. We absolutely have to have guns (particularly handguns). A handgun is like a tourniquet, you may never need it your whole life, but if you do need it, you need it quick!

    • David Kledzik

Rather be tried by twelve, than carried by six.

  • That’s Mr. Timesetter to you

If you own a gun for self defense and aren’t willing to accept the possibility that it might mean killing an intruder who might be a threat to you and your family’s lives, you may as well sell it and rely on 911 and the police to come to your aid.

    • David Kledzik

You’re right………. If a person cannot put themselves to kill an intruder, then they have no business owning a firearm. It’s more of a mental mindset. 21 years in the Corps taught me that mindset. Kill or be killed. Let God sort them out.

      • That’s Mr. Timesetter to you

Exacly. Myself, I’m not gonna question why someone is in my house. If they are in my house, they’ve made their own choice to take their chance with their life. If I’ve had the chance to grab my weapon, my mind is already made up.

        • Mort Leith

Which is the definition of Castle Doctrine:
You don’t have to SEE a weapon, you can automatically LEGALLY assume that they are in your home to do you GREAT bodily harm (lethal harm)…

          • That’s Mr. Timesetter to you

I hope I never have to experience something like a home invasion, but they call it self defense for a reason. We’ve got a small community with a pretty quick response time, but I’m not even remotely willing to rely on it like that.

          • J Bryan Jensen

That is correct. If someone enters my home uninvited I assume they are there to harm me and I’m not waiting to see a weapon they are going down, now!

Always, always, always “double tap” (two shots at a time). If you hit
them in “body mass” and they don’t go down, assume they have body armor
and pop them in the head or pop them in the crotch (below the belly
    button).

If you have not prepared yourself to “kill”, then you stand a
good chance of hesitating or freezing and YOU could well wind up being
the victim, because whomever has broken in has already prepared
themselves to do whatever is necessary to accomplish their goal. To
prepare, go over the scenario in your mind time after time until you are
confident that you CAN do what is necessary to protect yourself and
    family WITHOUT hesitation.
Never, never, never shoot anyone who is on
the floor or ground unless you can prove that you were still in danger
from them (video, etc.). If you do, some idiot District Attorney will
have you indicted for murder. If you’ve done it right and they are
down, they will no longer be a threat. They should no longer be sucking
    air.
Hint: Drop to one knee and shoot upwards to prevent
penetrating a wall and hitting one of your own. The last thing that you
want to do is miss, penetrate a wall and hit your wife or child.

In Texas, it is assumed that anyone who breaks into a home is a threat to do bodily harm and the threatened person can use deadly force. Now, if the intruder turns and runs, you can’t shoot them in the back.

I hope and Pray, that any individuals that have been committing such crimes as rape, breaking/entering, robbery , auto theft, etc., or have thought about involving themselves in a criminal endeavor, will have these “statistics” reveled to them, that they comprehend completely the intent and come to the realization that their life, or more correctly the LOSS of their life, is imminent, “just not worth it” and reconsider their “choices”.
Killing another human being, as a last resort, is something no one should have to endure, but if necessary, one should understand that the consequences for all involved will be life altering.

Otherwise, don’t have a gun for defense. You ain’t gonna scare a scumball just by waving one. It’s not a magic wand. The survey they didn’t take is our reaction if somebody threatens the country. PP below is correct

  • dprato

Well if you have purchased a firearm for self defense and have taken any type of course at all you would know that if you pull your gun you better be prepared to use it. There is no sense in having one if you don’t have the will to use it and understand the rules of engagement for the State in which you live.

Its important to go over a variety of scenarios in your mind so that you are mentally prepared for the “what ifs” and how you might react in a variety of situations. It also helps to make sure you practice frequently but more so that you convince yourself you can do it if you have to.

    • Mort Leith

I think there’s too many clueless people that think that one shot eliminates the threat,,,
      like in the movies….

      • dprato

I would think just the opposite. People get shot all the time in the movies and in five minutes they are up and running around. I always thought movie wounds were a joke in 98% of the cases. Someone takes a shot in the arm, leg, stomach and five minutes later they are fighting like nothing ever happened.
I really don’t know any folks who think one shot is enough unless it is a solid head shot. The few ladies I have trained, I always tell to keep shooting until you are sure they are totally disabled or dead. Wounded folks can still kill you.

        • J Bryan Jensen

Thats correct only a dead assailant can not pose further threat.

      • J Bryan Jensen

I have always favored the center mass “double tap” and if they are still in action, a head shot.

  • Billy Bong

I only wish the anti gun lobby understood that my gun is my last resort. I changed all exterior lights to daylight LEDs and leave them on from dusk till dawn. I have my alarm system on all night and when leave my home. I have signs posted in my front and backyard annotating that I have an alarm. I have alarm stickers on every ground floor window. If, even after all of this, you come into my home, I will put 15 rounds center mass and reload, just in case you have body armor. Again, my gun is my last resort, and the last thing you will see as you slip the surly bounds of this Earth.

    • Front Sight

When seconds count (the average gun fight lasts 15 seconds), the police are but minutes away. Save ammo. Two rounds center mass and one round to the fatal “T” (octal- cranial cavity).

Not every one can afford all that – especially a monthly fee. A used 38 is 150.
I can put 60 out. After 4 attempted breakins just since 2014 I keep a AR handy. If there is time, if not the P229 is closer. One attempt was nearly successful. After he breached the porch he yanked on the sliding glass door and that woke me. The lighting was such he probably saw me sit up in bed. He must have turned and went out. I usually wait ten min or so before lying back down. God was smiling on him as the door is pinned. I fixed the lighting problem. Another attempt they destroyed my locks but did not get in. One attempt I was up reading so I was able to dial 119 🙂 We caught him ” typical alien ” , but since he did not break in there was not enough to press charges. When a Mexican talks to with his head turned 90* away from and has a smile on his face one thing for sure they are lying.

Whoever those other two are, they need to get rid of their guns, or lock them away so they won’t be accessible, because they run the risk of being killed by their own weapon otherwise.

    “The Gun Is Civilization”

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that’s it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.

The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we’d be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger’s potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat–it has no validity when most of a mugger’s potential marks are armed.

People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that’s the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there’s the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser.

People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don’t constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.

The gun is the only weapon that’s as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn’t work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn’t both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don’t do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I’m looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don’t carry it because I’m afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn’t limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation… and that’s why carrying a gun is a civilized act. So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced.

The rules for defending yourself differ from state to state. I suggest anyone who believes they could shoot someone understand the rules for doing so in your state. Anyone that believes they might have to kill someone with pepper spray, an alarm system, a baseball bat and or a golf club don’t really understand the issue or given it much serious thought. One very same thing to know. If you ever feel is is necessary to point a gun at someone, you had better understand that after you shoot them your trouble is just beginning.

The “Second Amendment”…”Authorizes”……citizens to…”Kill”… anyone threatening their safety, security, freedoms or form of Government.

    Politicians in Particular.

Protecting our Safety, Security, Freedoms and form of Government begins with the kind of laws and society we allow the Government to create.

The simple fact of owning/possessing a gun is the “Right to Kill” whether from attack by street criminals or Political Criminals, violating the Constitution.

This poll is shocking!!! Maybe next they can find out how many people prefer clean drinking water! LOL. Of course 80% of people are going to defend their homes and loved ones. I am also willing to bet that a smaller number of people would actually pull the trigger. It’s one thing to say you will kill in self defense, but an entirely different story actually taking a life. It’s not easy, nor satisfying, even in self defense. A lot of people freeze up, run, or hide and there is no shame in doing so in most cases.

In today’s litigious America, shoot-to-kill is probably wiser than shoot-to-wound. The wounded intruder would probably drag you through the courts, wasting years of your life plus legal fees etc.

Think how many lives might be saved if the courts had a presumption of reasonable force against an intruder, and early dismissal of frivolous claims with costs awarded against the claimant (and his lawyer, in case of contingency arrangements).
