50,000 People Sent to Emergency Rooms Due to Police Violence Every Year

(Lily Dane, The Daily Sheeple) A new study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that from 2006 to 2012, there were approximately 51,000 emergency department visits per year for patients injured by law enforcement in the United States, with this number stable over this time period.

http://www.hngn.com/articles/137617/20151007/cindy-hahn-police-officers-beat-woman-sues-city-video.htm

From the press release:

During this time period, there were 355,677 ED visits for injuries by law enforcement, and frequencies did not increase over time. Of these visits, 0.3 percent (n = 1,202) resulted in death. More than 80 percent of patients were men, and the average age of patients was 32 years. Most lived in zip codes with median household income less than the national average, and 81 percent lived in urban areas. Injuries by law enforcement were more common in the South and West and less common in the Northeast and Midwest. Most injuries by law enforcement resulted from being struck, with gunshot and stab wounds accounting for fewer than seven percent. Most injuries were minor. Medically identified substance abuse was common in patients injured by police, as was mental illness.

The most common cause of injury was “being struck by or against” which accounted for approximately 77 percent of the ER visits.

Lead study author Dr. Elinore Kaufman, a surgical resident at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, told Live Science that mental illness was common, affecting 20 percent of people injured. She added that the study’s estimate of 51,000 emergency room visits per year does not include deaths that occur at crime scenes or people who are injured but do not seek medical attention.

Of the findings, the study authors wrote,

While public attention has surged in recent years, we found these frequencies [approximately 51,000 ED visits per year] to be stable over 7 years, indicating that this has been a longer-term phenomenon.

While it is impossible to classify how many of these injuries are avoidable, these data can serve as a baseline to evaluate the outcomes of national and regional efforts to reduce law enforcement-related injury.

According to The Counted, a database maintained by The Guardian, 1,146 people were killed by police in the US in 2015, and 1,092 lost their lives to law enforcement in 2016.

The Washington Post maintains a database called Fatal Force that tracks police shootings. So far in 2017, according to the database, 295 people have been fatally shot by police in the US.

A website called Killed By Police lists people who have been killed by police by all means, including gunshot, taser, restraint/physical force, chemical, vehicle, and “other.” The site is updated regularly, and as of the time of this writing, 343 deaths by law enforcement are documented.

    What kind of liberal bullshiit article is this ? ? ?
    ‘Liberty Headlines’ should be slapped for publishing this propaganda bullshiit under the guise of truth….

    Blaming cops for N1663Rs who threaten their lives and NEVER obey the law !

    • Did you read the byline? (Lily Dane, The Daily Sheeple).

      Liberty didn’t write, this, they just passed it on.

    • PRINCE4EVER O(->

      They’re supposed to be arrest, not beaten. Innocent until proven guilty still stands!

      • If someone being detained doesn’t start a fight, they don’t have a problem.

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          You also can invoke The 5th., then the Donut Nazis get really mad! The Police Pukes don’t like it when you know and assert your rights.

      • Jim Hall

        Care to guess how many of them were avoidable by having respect for law, behaving oneself, being sober in public? This tells one side of the story. There are far too many people pointing fingers at law enforcement who wouldn’t wear a uniform for one single day. They wouldn’t have the guts to face what law enforcement faces for even one day. Ever heard before you criticize, you should walk a day in their shoes? Without them putting their lives on the line, we would live in anarchy….

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          Anarchy does not mean chaos and disorder…learn something.

            Are you REALLY that stupid, or do you just do it for the extra dime auto-loaded by Soros onto your EBT card every time you post something stupid?
            Good grief- i could trade you for a pet monkey and get the better end of the deal.

          • PRINCE4EVER O(->

            I would never work for evil demon Soros. Now I know you’re nuts!

      • Brent

        True…but mentally ill, economically disadvantaged males disproportionately fail to follow orders from police officers.
        Remember, 50k/year is less than 140 per day in a country with around 325million people. I’d call that an acceptable number. Blatant police brutality isn’t acceptable…but this article really doesn’t address that distinction.

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          If one is mentally ill, they cannot comply. That does not mean it’s open season, you should have the proper training or find a new job.

          • Brent

            OK…then the cop can just do nothing until the people failing to follow instrucitons for whatever reason, break laws and hurt others. Not really a viable solution.

            Yes, I carried your example to a bit of an extreme conclusion. The same as you did to mine.

            But in general, if you have a problem with how the police do their job. Become a cop and put that uniform on. Get back with us in 5 years and let us know what you’ve learned.

          • PRINCE4EVER O(->

            Exactly, if you can’t be professional then find a new line of work. I would like to see all police departments abolished and go back to the old system that existed before police.

          • Brent

            Be careful what you wish for.
            Most swords have two edges.

  • johndubose

    Considering how big a country we have and how many cities and how many high crime areas, 50K/year may not be all that big in context.

    • Jim H.

      Considering all other options? I agree with your thought.

  • Scott Dillard

    Seems that there is a crime wave occurring in certain cities and area. Be interesting to see when 2017 stats come in.

  • bill14729 .

    Why not a story about how these people treat the police and fight them, Sorry but these people got what they deserved

    • Franie

      Heck yeah!

    • PRINCE4EVER O(->

      Nope, how do you know?

      • That’s the reality of life.

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          That’s the reality of leftists.

          • Franie

            “That’s the reality of leftist”???? You’re a leftist now, aren’t you? Leftist don’t seem to get the message in recent years. You don’t buck the system with violence. You fight the system with logic and reason through the court system. If you don’t have the money, then find a pro bono attorney to represent you. You NEVER fight the physical battle, you win on the intellectual battlefield. Then again, leftist are as ignorant and stupid as they come. Oh well. Until they get a grip and adhere to the law of the land, only then will they have any GRAVITAS!!!

          • MBounce

            Do you really believe that you could have won WW1 or WW2 with on the “intellectual battlefield”?

            Chairman Mao said that, “Political power comes out of the barrel of a gun”. He was, of course, correct. That is why the cops and the various government agencies want to have them and DON’T want you to have them, never mind their lies about supporting the Second Ammendment.

            The cops are nothing more than the Brown Shirts of our society. If you don’t know who the Brown Shirts were, please look it up.

          • Franie

            We’re not talking about world wars, buddy. We’re talking about the low intellect of the inner city morons who want to and think they have to stand up against the law.

            You can look to your own dam^ party, the democrats, who CONTROL the inner cities where this garbage always seems to emanate from. These cities are democrat CONTROLLED. Wisen up, it’s the dam^ed democrats who are trying to take your Rights away and “keep you imbeciles down on the plantation”!

            You think it’s time to vote the democrats out of office? The police take their ques from the Mayors of these democrat ruled cities.

          • MBounce

            I am not a Democrat and I have never been one. Your entire post is based on a GUESS, that you got WRONG.

          • Franie

            Me thinks not! Your whole mentality on this subject wreaks of the democrat mentality. You won’t find the republican mentality coming anywhere close to a confrontation with the law as republicans are not only Godly people, but law abiding citizens.

          • MBounce

            This country was created by people that bucked authority. It was hard for them to do, but, eventually, they realized that the tyrany of England could not be tolerated. If you and your ideas were in charge, we would still be kneeling at the feet of the British, bowing to their king, and asking their permission for every little thing.

      • Franie

        FYI moron. You NEVER attack the police for it is they who uphold the laws of our land. You have an issue with them, you do the INTELLIGENT thing and file a complaint. To go up against the police, you will ALWAYS LOSE!!!!

        • MBounce

          I have been abused by the cops twice and my son once. You may file all the complaints that you want, but the results will be the same as I had. NOTHING will be done. NOTHING will change, you will ALWAYS LOSE.

          The comment that the police are the ones that uphold the laws of our land, almost caused me to throw up. Many, not all, are simply thugs with a gun and a badge. These are the ones that I call, “State sponsored terrorists”. The correct statement is that if you standup to the police, they will always KILL you.

          • Franie

            So WHY were you attacked in the first place? WHY were you and your son being confrontational?? Why didn’t you have the ‘smarts’ to walk away??? You get what you deserve, nothing more, nothing less. YOU DO NOT CONFRONT THE POLICE!!! If and when you and your son learn how to respect authority, then and only then, will your lives be free from further conflict!!

          • MBounce

            I did not say that I was “attacked” by the police, I said I was “abused” by the police. They have lots of ways to abuse you without a physical attack.

            Have you ever tried just “walking away” from a cop who is yelling and screaming right in your face? If you did, they would claim that you were “fleeing a police officer” and shoot you in the back.

            I have VERY LITTLE respect for the police, as mostly they have not earned any. In general(there are always exceptions), they are poorly trained and poorly educated. What they want you to do is to bow and scrape, show them great reverence, and kiss their hobnail boots, so they will feel important and like they are running the show. It is unfortunate that the police have been given almost unlimited power which they frequently abuse.

            I don’t go out looking for a cop to confront. Confronting them is not very important to me. DEFEATING them, after they have chosen to abuse me, is very important and quite satisfying. On every single occasion when I have shown up in court with a good attorney and demanded a jury trial, the cops and the prosecutors have suddenly decided that they have pressing business elsewhere.

            MILLIONS FOR DEFENSE, NOT ONE CENT FOR TRIBUTE!

          • You’ve been “abused” by police twice (I suspect that you initiated it and the police reciprocated), and your son once. Man, you’re setting a “great” example for your son

          • MBounce

            Thank you for the compliment. I have taught him that he does not have to kiss up to the cops. He knows that he sould stand up for his rights and not let them push him around.

            You may suspect anything that you want.

      • More and more every day, body cams that police wear show the irrefutable truth about stupid idiots starting fights with police. Cops are being absolved of brutality charges, and those who go after police can be charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer and go to the slammer.

  • Jim H.

    Maybe it is due to the fact that the patients became/were violent, were apprehended during the commission of a crime (i ain’t did nuthin), comitting a violent act, robbery, dealing drugs, resisting arrest. Did these morons think about those possibilities?
    Everywhere I’ve been the police are stern, but never violent until/unless necessary. Although there are some who seem to provoke the violence.

    I also noticed in the article “color of the skin” was not a factor nor mentioned! Maybe they should also mention how many of the people were resisting, fighting, were previously or became violent, committing a crime, a violent crime, and were carrying or using a weapon during the commission of a crime.

    Don’t print half the facts. PRINT ALL THE FACTS! Leave nothing out!

    • Craig Vandertie

      Judging from your mockery of the hypothetical perpetrator I conclude they spent way too much time learning how to speak from the Hooked On Ebonics language tutorial, “scuze me, do you know way back to Milwaukee,” as 1 black gentleman asked me through the window of his vehicle while in far northeastern WI.

  • Libs R Loons

    Why not name the cities where the police have the the most criminals to deal with?
    If they have a democrat mayor, the appointed police chiefs (whom will also be democrats) encourage the heavy-handed behavior of the police forces….assuming those stats are actually legitimate.
    Obama did politicize every agency in the country to the point that “stats” are manipulated to support his anti-cop, anti-gun, and anti-Constitutional agendas.
    This article’s “facts” do little except provide Bloomberg with more fodder for his anti-2nd rhetoric.
    That said, BLUE LIVES MATTER, except to a criminal.

          The mantra that “If you don’t have anything to hide, then you don’t have anything to worry about”, is just superficially plausible, but actually wrong. Google that phrase and you will see several articles that will show you why. Please read the 2nd article dated Aug 2, 2013 on aclu.org. This whole concept is completely destroyed. There are some very good comments there too. Check it out.

    The headline reads: “50,000 People Sent to Emergency Rooms Due to Police Violence Every Year” and if you read down a bit, you find, ” Medically identified substance abuse was common in patients injured by police, as was mental illness.”

    Why do I get the feeling this is just another “badmouth the cops” kind of story?

    ” Most injuries were minor.” …. then why were they emergency room cases? Could it be that any time someone is injured by a cop, no matter how slight, medical treatment is standard operating procedure?

    • Jim H.

      Because it is. You have a good point.

    • Karen

      It has to be, otherwise it’s a lawsuit waiting to happen because injuries could “worsen” later.

    • Craig Vandertie

      To be honest dealing with my now deceased fiance who was afflicted with and suffered from the symptoms of Bipolar Depression and Paranoid Schizophrenia I am not sure exactly what the best means of dealing with someone going through manic rage.

      I would imagine they sympathize with the mentally ill, but at the same time need to consider Public Safety and their own safety.

      As for mere drug attics, and in the vast majority I doubt being under the influence of street drugs has anything to do with their violent behavior or mental illness, it is the Demoncommiecratic party and the Lamestream media responsible.

      The Demoncommiecrats fail to address the problem and the Lamestream media condoning resisting arrest or openly being violent towards the police by saying police are racist and biased towards your color, neglecting the fact that the person was, or has just committed a crime.

  • Karen Tria

    It would be easy to reduce those statistics. The police just won’t send criminals to the ER unless they are severely injured. Sending them to the ER actually protects the police from further lawsuits were criminals claim to be victims of brutality. The non-partial ER doctor writes up the report.

  • big KAhuna

    I’m glad our police are standing their ground and taking down the bad people.
    Those resisting or not in compliance should be sent to the ER. I’ll back the police any day. They put it on the line for us every day. Police Rock and Liberal News Sucks!

      Why does VOTE DOWN not work?

      You remind me of the canard, “When they came for the Jews, I was not a Jew, so I did not stand up for them. When they came for the Gypsies, I was not a Gypsy, so I did not stand up for them.” If you don’ know where this is going, please look it up.

      The most important question is this, “WHO WATCHES THE WATCHERS?” It is quite obvious that the answer right now is NO ONE. That must change.

      • big KAhuna

        You are dilusional – internal affairs checks on the actions of our police. Your trying to paint a false picture that Police are above the law. Not so! By doing so you are helping the Criminals and that speaks volumes about your lack of credibility and lies.

        • MBounce

          I have not told any lies here, PERIOD!! I may not have any credibiilty with you, because you appear to be one of folks that will give the police a free pass, no matter how badly they act.

          You can file a complaint with Internal Affairs and absolutely NOTHING will happen. IF you have cell phone video of and plenty of wittnesses to some pretty horrible police brutality, and you can get the public involved, you might stand a chance of getting a brutal cop brought to justice. But don’t bet a 6-pack on it.

          • You are a reason why police are starting to wear body cams, and a lot of police brutality claims are being tossed based on what the videos show.

          • MBounce

            The police are the ultimate CYA folks. First and foremost, they protect themselves and/or other cops. If you think that the cops are there to protect you, then you are horribly mistaken. The US Supreme Court has ruled that the cops have NO OBLIGATION to help or protect you, only society in general.

            When the general public began to see some of the horrific examples of police brutality, brought to you by cell phone video, they could not hide, explain away, or dismiss what the police had done. The public was getting really angry. The body cams are a result of the public DEMANDING them and the cops realizing that evidence of the police actions be preserved. IF that evidence showed that there was no abuse, then fine. But when the evidence showed otherwise, then the abusive cops could be prosecuted accordingly.

            There are still a large number of police who will not wear/use a body camera, because they just don’t want any unfavorable evidence around. Then there are the body cameras that “just did not work”, were for some reason turned off, or were “lost” after a horrific crime was committed.

            The old ways of hiding what the police have done are falling apart. People are now realizing that lying, stealing, cheating, manufacturing evidence, manipulating the crime scenes are MUCH more common than previously believed. Each of the above is a felony crime. It would be nice if the police would enforce the law against their own folks who break the laws, with the same passion as they do against us.

      • Franie

        WHAT??? You make no sense.

  • Ron C

    Law Enforcement is the toughest work out there…and has no room for unprofessional behavior in their ranks, if they allow it, it could get their fellow officer’s killed.

  • mac mcintire

    So you throw in drug abuse, knifeings. So essentially when ever a cop brings in a criminal and their throwing up, it’s considered crime by police. Like global warming. Facts don’t matter.

    • bob laford

      Exactly right! Liberty Headlines should be ashamed for posting this lunatic fringe, left wing, statistically manipulated baloney! Let the Huffington Post readers suffer this swill.

      • Franie

        My sentiments exactly. Lily Dane, the author of this ridiculous and insulting piece of garbage journalism, ought to if she were smart, bring forth just the opposite side to this scenario. But alas, she obviously doesn’t have the intellect to be a real journalist. It’s a shame that she promotes and adheres to the “fake news” for negative sensationalism. Little does she realize that her future will never ‘take off’ until she becomes an ‘individual’ with a thinking brain to convince the public that what she has to say, has at least a smidgeon of truth in it.

  • Franie

    Nice going Lily Dane, for this HIT PIECE on our law enforcement men and women. NOT!!! How about writing an article explaining the WHY as to why there are so many injuries. Those who were injured apparently NEVER GOT THE MESSAGE that their behavior is and was against our laws. Until such time as the liberal media start to bring forth the POSITIVE side of our laws, and what is expected of the citizenry pertaining to those laws in instructing and informing these imbecilic morons to clean up their acts, we’re going to see a whole lot more injuries to these low intellect, uneducated, moronic imbeciles.

    Lily Dane, how about showing your PATRIOTIC side to your journalism!!!

    • Franie

      Wow, what a novel idea! You’d think these imbeciles would know better than to pick a fight with the police. There is no excuse for shear stupidity. They, the imbecilic morons, get what they richly deserve!!! If it means a trip to the ER, so be it!!! Too bad it’s not a trip to prison.

      • A huge percentage of those injured when they pick fights with police are also under the influence of drugs (or they’re simply nuts) and this needs to be addressed in the ERs.

      • PRINCE4EVER O(->

        We need to send more Cop Pigs to the ER….or morgue.

          The cops believe that they are “Special” and that the laws do not apply to them. Unfortunately, mostly, they are right. All you need to do is to start reading a very great many of our laws and they say, “Except for a Peace Officer” BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

  • Maxine Albritton

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          That’s proof right there that cops are criminals. You don’t shoot a suspect in the back, you arrest them and charge them with a crime.

        • MBounce

          Before cell phone video, judges, juries, and the general public just took whatever the cops said as gospel. Even if the circumstances did seem a bit fishy.

          After cell phone video, we have seen way too many cases where the cops shot someone in the back who was running away. Most did not have a gun so there was no way that the cop could claim, “I was afraid, so I shot him”. We have also seen the cops rearranging the scene, or dropping a “throw down gun” near the body, or getting together so they could get their lies straight. If a cop shoots someone that is running away and has no gun, then that is murder. Arrest the cop, charge him, and prosecute.

      LEO: Legally Entitled to Oppress

      • Man, you have a real problem with the good guys, don’t you.

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          When if ever, I meet a good cop….I’ll change my mind.

          • MBounce

            Though I never thought I would say this, but I do know some decent cops, who are the “good guys”. But I have run into some real Gestapo thugs too. Unfortunately, the good ones will not “enforce” the law against the bad ones. And the prosecutors and judges just tend to look the other way, even in cases where murder, rape, and / or grand theft are involved.

            It would be wonderful if we could be SURE that every cop was a “good guy”, but that is clearly not the case. You just never know when one of them is going to beat you up or shoot you in the back. Check out the story of Scott Tschirhart, a cop in Houston on civiliansdown.com. The article there shows that, “In seven years of duty, Houston police officer Scott Tschirhart has killed three men and beaten another. All were black.” He was never prosecuted for any of this.

    50,000 sent to ER due to “police violence”????
    Talk about liberal BS. People, we need to stand together and protect our country from the Liberal Democrat fever. It is just over the top. How about being just a little fair, in that most of these injuries are probably due to insolent citizens or totally drug induced rages???

  • If you don’t start fighting with law enforcement, you won’t suffer adverse consequences. Quite simple, eh?

    • PRINCE4EVER O(->

      How about when Cop Pigs start a fight with you?

      • Cops don’t start fights with calm, mild, innocent people who have done nothing wrong. When they are dealing with probable lunatics and criminals, they sometimes have to defend themselves.

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          A complete misconception on your part. Attack by cop is well known.

  • Craig Vandertie

    Lily Dane journalist for the Daily Steeple, seems to me that she is the 1 who had the wool pulled over her eyes.

    • PRINCE4EVER O(->

      Police Pukes are psychopaths!

      • Doubtful. They get psych testing before they are ev en recruited. Unfortunately, they are forced to deal with psychopaths.

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          They have “Roid Rage” from all of the steroids they take to bulk up, or PTSD from being in the military then becoming a cop upon return. They see all citizens as “The Enemy.”

          • MBounce

            Google “roid rage in police” and read the article on alternet.org. Ask yourself why almost every cop that you run into looks like The Incredible Hulk? Why are these bulked up cops so insistent on ordering you around, threatening you, and trying to intimidate you?

            Then check out the web site civiliansdown.com. This is a web page for just Harris County in TX(the Houston area). Read the articles under “Top Shoter”. You will be outraged and disgusted at what the murderous cops were able to get away with in Houston. Then realize that there are thousands more shootings like this all around the country. Almost never are the cops charged, tried, and sent to jail.

  • spike

    If there is a scrape they probably have to be checked. Otherwise, if you obey what the officer says you won’t need a side trip to emergency. If you read the article, most were minor and officers are bound by their oath to protect the folks from perps and they have the right and duty to protect themselves and their fellow officers!

    • PRINCE4EVER O(->

      In a free country, you don’t have to “Obey” anyone.

      • Craig Vandertie

        Clearly you are an anarchist, crawl back under your rock.

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          Anarchy simply means without rulers, it doesn’t mean chaos and disorder.

          • Libs R Loons

            Chaos and disorder is what you GET when there are no rules or people to enforce them.
            But dream on, ya little faggit, because you wouldn’t last an hour on the street if the SHTF.

          • PRINCE4EVER O(->

            Rules not “Rulers.”

      • In a “free” country, you have to participate as a responsible citizen, not as a cop hating jerk.

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          Hating Cop Pigs is a Constitutionally guaranteed right!

          • Libs R Loons

            Post the exact wording, as written in the Constitution….we’ll wait.

          • PRINCE4EVER O(->

            That would be called The First Amendment (freedom of speech), maybe you’ve heard of it????

      • spike

        Hopefully, you don’t wind up testing that theory. Police Officers are there to protect the innocent and perps and/or suspects better obey if accosted by an officer – that is how the innocent and officers are most likely going to remain safe in a free societiy.

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          Then you do not have a free society….

          • spike

            Such nonsense!

          • PRINCE4EVER O(->

            How did the country ever get along before police?

          • spike

            Well – vigilantes, hanging parties, such as that. One way or another folks are going to try to keep some order and themselves and their families safe.

      • MBounce

        Right ON! I want to know EXACTLY what law gives the police the right to order me around like I was their slave. Others have posted we must obey the “lawful orders” of the police. I want to know EXACTLY what orders are “lawful”. Show me the law and show me the list of EXACTLY what “orders” are lawful and so that I will know that any other “orders” are NOT LAWFUL. The difficulty, of course, is that the Gestapo will beat you to a pulp or kill you whether their “orders” were lawful or not.

  • PRINCE4EVER O(->

    Donut Nazis love to murder innocent people and shoot family pets!

    • Libs R Loons

      Put down the meth pipe and back slowwwwwly away from the computer before you hurt yourself.
      On second thought………….

      • PRINCE4EVER O(->

        Police Pukes LOVE to kill dogs & cats especially.

  • Libs R Loons

    Hey, BLM rioters…..who are you gonna call when you NEED a cop- Al Charlatan?

    • PRINCE4EVER O(->

      Who needs Cop Pigs?

      • Libs R Loons

        YOU’D be crying for a cop when you get home-invaded, moron….or do you think Al Sharpton will be available to protect you from an attacker?

        • PRINCE4EVER O(->

          Any home intruders would be dead in a few seconds. So, I would only need a truck from the morgue to pick up the bodies.

  • Brent

    Hmmm…50,000 er visits per year. That’s a little less than 140 per day, in a country with…lest say 325,000,000 people.
    I’d call that an acceptable number.

    Asside from that, no kiding the poor are disproportionally represented! There are reasons why some people are poor…and a good portion of it has to do with poor decision making.

    Yeah…not an article that was worth reading.

  • steven jacobs

    only 50,000?-The police deal with murderers, psychopaths, muggers, rapists, wife and child beaters, drugged out wackos,and schizos who don’t understand reality-just 50,000? I would say the police use remarkable RESTRAINT.
